Above target pay rise for teachers

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/7188649.stm

Could the different approach of HMG to this public sector negotiation be down to the fact that teahers can/do strike and the police don't?

Perhaps there are some Polish teachers we could employ if our existing ones are not happy ?

Is anyone at this level happy about their pay 'rises'?

Ah but why use RPI when they can use other indexes that make the economy look in far better shape than it actually is.
Still now they've got a rise above the 2% target when the MP's inevitably vote themselves a similar rise they can say they are just keeping up with the teachers.

It's exactly 2.45% better than nothing in fact Lots of people don't get anything but that won't necessarily make the teachers happy.

imo you couldnt pay teachers enough ! when you consider what type of pupils some of them are trying to teach, you would need the patience of a saint to survive the day sometimes good luck to them.

Re: Above target pay rise for teachers

I got 3% last year, but that increase does not even cover the extra cost's incurred by me for my travel to and from work.
But if the Gov were to give a higher pay rise where would the extra funds come from? Would overall taxation go up? Regardless of the outcome everyone will loose out in some small way.

Re: Above target pay rise for teachers

It won't cost any extra in reality as 2.45% of the teachers will be laid off.

Re: Above target pay rise for teachers

instead of battling it out for an extra 0.5% rise or something all the unions would be better in joining forces and exposing the scam inflation figures.

An example with all the recent announcements regarding higher gas prices we can expect the fuel weighting to be reduced in inflation calculations so inflation doesnt jump up (its already low weighted). Currently fashion clothing is weighted higher which seems absurb.

Actually looking at some past above inflation pay rises MPs have awarded themselves, EVERYONE else would be trying to keep up with the MPs.

Re: Above target pay rise for teachers

I don't begrudge any public sector worker their pay increase they do hard jobs for bugger all reward. I can't help thinking there is a blairite lurking in this government creating problems i mean one week the police can sod off on their pay but this week teachers can have theirs how stupid is this government.

Personally i think it is time all public sector workers were represented by one union with departments for the different jobs that people do and really make this government sweat. Also if that happened the police may not be able to strike but all the other members could and force things that way.

I have got to agree with you there mate, the amount of absolutely fantastic teachers i've had are worth easily double what they're earning now. Seriously.

My mathematics teacher when i hit Y7 was amazing, taught everything perfectly and made the lessons entertaining (but not a bloody circus like some do...) However, my class had roughly 10 people who constantly disrupted the lessons, which made things so stressful for her, that her lessons tended to end a few minutes early to deal with all the people she'd had to send outside.
Only year i ever passed maths with 100%... (averaged anywhere between 75 and 95%)

As for Science, Years 7 - 10, some good teachers, some amazing debates and wild stories from them that taught us well... When they could teach. It all changed the end of Y10 and into 11, we got yet another fantastic teacher, who could keep everyone calm and quiet and still teach us perfectly... I left with a double A grade in Science.

As for all the other teachers i've missed: Mr Cole, Mrs Hague, Mr Dickinson. These were also fantastic. (So much so i ended up with one or two of them 2 years straight).

Never did have a good English teacher though... Ah well.
