Error code 500

Could you help me?

I finally uploaded my first web page (home page) using an ftp. No problems getting the file to the server. But when I came to view the website in a browser I got an error message 500. I don`t know what this is. I also noticed that when I clicked on the home page all the graphics were missing, the colors ect, and the images were broken. To boot, I had to login 21 times before it accepted my username and password. I tried transferring the other files on my hard drive to the htdoc directory. I noticed that on the file path of the home page it was very odd:

http://www.<my site name>.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/index.htm/htdocs/index.htm

ps. my site name is a secret for now.

I can`t work it out.
