Folding@Home PC/PS3 Owners

I asked this in another topic and got a answer that some people are on different teams. I recall that Cable Forum once had a team for different DC projects and thought I would try once more to get some more people involved. It's a long shot but maybe some others would like to try Distributed Computing and those who did or do might like to re-start or re-join a Cable Forum Team!

It's a project which uses your idle computing power to help scientists anaylise proteins and thus can help with understanding and hopefully curing dieases such as cancer, ALS, parkinsons and more.

Ideally any PS3 owners who are not using Folding@Home could join and any PC/Mac owners could join in as well.

You need to download the client at: http://folding.stanford.edu/.

Then Join team: 38823

http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/m...&teamnum=38823

We're 5252 of 97433 at the moment, I think we can push that up!

Mods, I am aware of the other topics but those seem to be devoted to a wide-range of different projects and seem to have died. I am hoping to give this one more push hence the new topic!

Re: Folding@Home PC/PS3 Owners

I do recall recommending Folding@home to one of the younger members here on CF quite recently.Anybody sitting bored in front of their pc`s can always be donating those unused cpu cycles to good causes though..

Good stuff.

Are you the other person, other than Tod, on the team?

Didn't realise there was a CF team for this. I may defect from my current one...

Not me
I probably should though, theres plenty CPU cycles going to spare round here, even though i myself am rarely ever "bored" when in front of a pc.

I`m not one for leaving things on overnight but i might start donating something,somewhere.....now that you`ve made me feel just a wee bit guilty about not doing so

The thing is, we could easily be in the top 1000, 500 if we got some more people. Especially the PS3 and people with fast desktops

Re: Folding@Home PC/PS3 Owners

As a rule the text based clients will offer a higher output than the graphical (screensaver) ones, simply because the PC, when idle, doesn't have to run the screensaver so all it's cycles go to folding.

However, the choice of client also depends on your standard of computer, and how long it is likely to run for:
Standard WUs (Workunits) all have a set time for completion and submission. This does vary from WU type to WU type, but typically you'll have at least 2 weeks.
The windows SMP client harnesses the power of dual and quad cored CPUs, but you only have a few days to return the WU. On a fair paced dual core PC you need around 24 hours of CPU time, but must return the WU within 4 days.
The windows GPU client (if you have a compatible ATI based graphic card) can do a WU in around 12 hours on a 9800xtx. Again they need to be submitted in 4 days. Watch out for the temperature on the graphics card, and don't try running with standard CPU folding. You must also have the correct version ATI drivers.

All clients are beta, so from time to time can change. The SMP and GPU are most likely to change and you'd have to update if necessary.

There is a fair amount of information on the folding website. I can also suggest you read another forum's setup guide.

Re: Folding@Home PC/PS3 Owners

I fold for a different team (still the same casue aye) who are 67th overall which is really good since they are a small team but they have been doing it since the dawn of time. I'm #6 in the team now on nearly 1.2 million points.
Which puts me #1354 of 893812 in the project.

Sorry for the bump, but is the CF team still going? Just I noticed this on another forum I go on and I've just started using this program as my laptop is always turned on.

I'm using the nvidia GPU client on a 9600GT, it does a 25000 workunit in three hours.
