I have a domain & want to send emails using that address
I want to be able to send my e-mails using Outlook showing my domain address (eg. mail@mydomain.co.uk) rather than myname1234@ntlworld.com.
I phoned support but, during a lengthy call, they didn't seem to understand at all what I was talking about. I understand from other ISPs that all Virgin/NTL need do is add the domain to my profile so that outgoing messages don't get rejected.
I had been assuming that this would be a normal request as lots of people have domains these days - but perhaps it isn't supported with Virgin/NTL ?
Assuming it is doable, would it be better if I sent them an email ?
Who should I send it to and what should I say please ?
Thanks

Re: I have a domain & want to send emails using that address
It should work.
I am trying to remember how I got around that using my domain and ntl SMTP servers, I'll try to get back to you on this.
The solution really depends on what outbound email service your host provides.
The easiest way is to configure a new account with your host email address that POP 3's from your domain, but SMTP's out using the Virgin/NTL servers. Make sure that your reply-to address is the same as your outbound address.

Re: I have a domain & want to send emails using that address
imo, vm should only provide mail servers for their current customers and those using the vm chosen domains (eg ntlworld.com/blueyonder.co.uk/virgin.net/etc).
if you get your own domain (again imo), it should be up to you to secure mail services for it, not your residential isp

Posting on the virginmedia.support.e-mail newsgroup would probably be the best way to get a definitive answer, but realistically I'd look use an SMTP server associated with your domain rather than relaying via a VM SMTP server.

Re: I have a domain & want to send emails using that address
Thanks for these comments.
The last one (Nemeth) mentioned the word Relaying - that made me realise that another ISP I deal with (Entanet) when asked, simply add the domain to what they call the client's "RELAY" and then sending out messages is no problem.
I'd be grateful for any further advice others might have.

afaik you will need to log into the control panel for your domain & see what is available, some domain resellers will provide mail services such as forwarded addresses

Re: I have a domain & want to send emails using that address
I don't know whether this is a significant issue since I've never got to work with SMTP and email services much, but afaik having email originating from an SMTP server associated with your domain can help prevent it being flagged as spam.
Basically lots of spam checking systems use scores for determining whether something is spam, and having an email originating from an SMTP server that doesn't match the domain can count toward that score.
Again I don't know whether it really is a significant issue, and it doesn't stop lots of people relaying email the way you're trying to do, I just got the impression from seeing this issue crop up a couple of times that it was best practice to relay email via an SMTP server associated with your domain.

Re: I have a domain & want to send emails using that address
"I want to be able to send my e-mails using Outlook showing my domain address (eg. mail@mydomain.co.uk) rather than myname1234@ntlworld.com."
Thanks for comments but just to clarify so others will not be put off by the technicalities - senders can send messages OK to mail@mydomain.co.uk because mail-forwarding is simply set up by the domain registrar.
The practical problem then becomes when using a domain to send messages, you want the recipient to know it came from mail@mydomain.co.uk and not myname234@ntlworld.com. You would do this by showing in Outlook/Outlook Express A/C settings, your e-mail address and reply address as mail@mydomain.co.uk. But without VM/NTL noting the domain in the Relay, any messages sent will just get immediately bounced back.
Has anyone been able to send messages using a domain please ?

Re: I have a domain & want to send emails using that address
well you should be able to set up your outlook or whatever mail app it is to have the mail servers as
incoming and outgoing are usually mail.mydomain.co.uk
then your user id is your email address and password the password associated with that.
Most external servers will accept a SMTP send connection from any IP address as long as that IP address has recently connected and authienticated by POP3 or IMAP.
If you are having problems sending you can keep VMs SMTP server but if you take your laptop outside of the NTL network that will not work as a connection.

Re: I have a domain & want to send emails using that address
Umm . . . I feel sure it must be possible for Virgin to add the domain name to a client's relay - it's such a simple convenience they could add for us - especially as on their own web site they offer purchase of domains

I have never had any problems sending messages using the smtp.ntlworld.com SMTP server with the email address set to my domain address. I have never had any bounced back and as far as I know they all get through.

VM's domain registration is more of a partnership with Easily...at an extortionate price.
