Re: RIP Sir Edmund Hillary
Absolutely. Still, getting to 88 is pretty good going for a mountaineer. Good for him, I'll raise a glass to his memory.

Re: RIP Sir Edmund Hillary
This puts his initial achievement in its proper perspective.
Of course, after that he went on to do a lot of good for the Sherpa people with his Himalayan Trust...

Our window cleaner went to Nepal a couple of years ago & didn't make it to the summit of Everest due to mountain sickness.
His description of that put in very graphic terms what anyone attempting the ascent has to face..
But it was discovering the legacy Sir Edmund left, namely the Himalayan Trust, that most impressed me about his life - a true gent!

Re: RIP Sir Edmund Hillary
And if Edmond's Sherpa had been a white person, then his would be a household name. I'm convinced that Tenzing Norgay carried Hilary to the top of Everest on his back, as well as his kettle and cup and saucer.

Agree... and am not disrespecting Hilary's achievement.
Heck- he was New Zealander? I always thought he was a Brit

Well I can't agree as I also regard the man as a hero...as did Hillary himself.
I just don't understand the modern day attitude of dissing every achievement of the British Empire because we have become sooooo PC and anti racist in hindsight.

Not at all biased there, then. It's ok, he wasn't a Brit.
I was always taught that they were both first to climb Everest (it was always Hillary and Tensing).

Tenzing Norgay is a household name, as much as Hillary in my opinion...
