Electrical wire query...
Hi all,
Just a quick question I'm hoping someone might be able to help me with...
I want to use some wire to power a small wireless security camera a distance from my house. I've been told bell wire is good as it's only 12v I need to use it with and it's very thin wire so could go through a smaller hole...
Thing is, if I look up wire I don't often find much listed as 'bell wire', I wondered what else it'd be called? Not being much of an electrical expert or anything...

Re: Electrical wire query...
Is the cable going overground or underground?
If its outdoors you shouldnt really use bell wire

Oh it's for overground...
It wouldn't be that bad if it got damaged or something chewed through it. Would it be against regulations etc. to use outdoor or is it just because it's quite easily damaged compared to thicker wire types?

Re: Electrical wire query...
Should be fine outside at 12v - might want to put it in some sort of conduiting, for protection (only thin wire).

Re: Electrical wire query...
A few more details needed first, deffo need a model / make number. Then distance, and then to see if it needs 2 or more cores

This is the closest match I can find at the moment:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Wireless-Pinho...QQcmdZViewItem

Distance wise, I'd say about 6-8 metres from the house.

Looking at that, all you would need is a multi-core alarm cable, I would steer clear of the 'bell wire' route, it's a bit cowboy-ish A 4 core cable would be small enough diameter to go just about anywhere, available at most diy stores / electrical wholesalers etc etc, and not expensive.

Re: Electrical wire query...
if it's being burried then i'd be inclined to use some braided cable and run into a jb with some choc block, then run it out with some 4/6 core alarm cable.
Main cable SY Braided Cable
Jb Plastic Junction Box
Alarm cable Alarm Cable
and some choc blok and armour gland from b&q, all those are examples. you might think it's a bit ott but saves using small alarm that may get damaged and those bits should set you back no more than £30-40 max.

Re: Electrical wire query...
There are regulations seeing as it is a fixed system, but you should be OK because it comes under Separated extra-low voltage systems (SELV) because the power supply feeding it is probably class II and is under 30Vdc.
The only thing I will say is the IEE wiring regulations 411-02-06 (ii) states: "SELV circuit conductors shall be enclosed in an insulating sheath additional to their basic insulation." that excludes bell wire as that is only got basic insulation, but alarm cable is fine because that's what it is intended for.
