The best Wireless Cable Router for use with P2P file sharing?
Hi,
I have a Netgear WPN824... it drops my connection when using P2P file sharing. I'm not new to this and have done everything I can to stop it, including lowering the global connections to 20... which does allow me to use my 20mb connection to it's best.
I'm wondering if someone could tell me what the best router is for stability with p2p? I need something that I can use as good as what my modem is on it's own?

Linksys WRT54g or WRT54GS
No problems here with global connections on 750 odd.

Best give up P2P and pay a few quid for newsgroups no share rating needed less virus risk less chance of a RIAA sniffing at ya folders

I agree with Mr Zinglebarbs post.
And to top it you get decent speeds as well.
Dont be tight, get right!!!!! and pay for your downloads

Well to answer the OP's question, I agree with AbyssUnderground. These routers have open source firmware meaning there are great third party firmwares you can download to help increase the router's efficiency in handling P2P traffic. The stock firmware doesn't handle it too well over time, and starts to decrease your speeds until a reset is done. Therefore I recommend DD-WRT. Good luck

Newsgroups + WRT54GS (v4 or earlier) + Tomato firmware and the world is your oyster. Esp with current exchange rates

What are the key features of Tomato over DD-WRT do you know? I can't find the wiki page for it and there's no features list on their website...

Not abusing the GPL for one ( http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=dd-wrt+gpl )
[Edit: I must add this is debatable - two sides to every story http://dd-wrt.blogspot.com/2007/02/a...ill-alive.html etc. etc.]
I think the differences to most people are more subjective. Tomato has a leaner GUI IMO. It's fast and small but I havent seen any benchmarks against DD-WRT.
Its less extensible (I think DD-WRT supports OpenWrt packages) but it does everything I need (Static DHCP assignments, port forwarding / triggering, WDS, Wireless Client extension, multiple DDNS support, QoS etc etc).

OK sounds good, and also... AHA! Static DHCP just what I've been looking for. Very useful, the linksys support team had no idea what I was asking them about when I said "is there a way I can make sure one computer gets the same IP whilst others get theirs dynamically?"

Why not just set the IP statically on the computer!?

Have been running Tomatoe since v1.03 after trying DD-WRT and I'm glad I did. It's super slick UI is excellent along with all the features you could want imo(Its QOS implementation is excellent). Stable as a rock on my wrt54gl. Love it and donated $10 for his hard work (There's also an VPN version if you want it).

Leaving your network setup on automatic means there's no reconfiguration if you move to a different network, great for laptop's.

Yup and all of the management is in one place. Everything is saved in your router configuration.

Re: The best Wireless Cable Router for use with P2P file sharing?
If you go the DD-WRT route dont buy a WRT54* as they cant handle 20meg with QOS enabled. Use the Buffalo WHR-G125 instead which has a faster processor and is still only around £30.

Yeah. I don't use DHCP (personally) but I know it's a pain when laptops are involved.
