Your point would hold water if those teams had spent the same amount of money as Roman. As for the squad before he bought the league, yes it was good - his cash made it better.

Thats the thing, they weren't his signings, they cost the most interms of transfer fee and wages, if it were all about money, these two would have sent the premiership on fire

Think back Leeds and Newcastle spent absolute fortunes, might not be as much as Chelsea but they still broke transfer records and yes his money did make it much easier for them to compete, however it also brought unforeseen consequences like pressure to win things and intolerable interference, money isn't everything, in fact to Jose and Ranieri it was a poisoned chalice

Re: Football : Season 2007/2008
Again the difference is that before Roman, Chelsea were already a pretty good team, so spending £20m+ on players is always going to make a significant improvement - Newcastle were a mid-table table team and didn't spend anywhere near what the Russian splashed out on.

And failed to continue to make big name (and equally large fee) signings - therefore your comparison to Chelsea ends there.

We must have been watching different matches, we didn't let them get any decent chances on goal, only long shots from outside the area which were no trouble, apart from two or three very poor mistakes from VDS they never really looked like scoring, whereas Rooney missed a howler in the second half for us.

Actually their manager left and things fell apart under the stewardship of others despite being backed to the hilt in the transfer market, therefore the comparison might be quite prophetic

Just let me see if I'm hearing you correctly - you're saying Newcastle's spending power in the mid 90s is on par with that of Chelsea's?

No but then things are relative, 10 years ago they spent a lot more than most and ended up with a couple of losers medals to show for it, showing that simply throwing money at is isn't always the answer

I feel like a beer. What to have? Ah, yes, a London Pride fits the Bill (Gallas).
Oh, and what happened with the northern monkey's friendly earlier?

No, but throwing mega-money at it seems to help.

And the award, for the team with the most fickle supporters goes to.................
Please send your entry to us, on the back of a first class postage stamp. Unfortunately, there's probably only enough room for no more than 7 letters. But, as luck would have it..............
