"...it is Home Office policy to remove political dissidents to Uzbekistan"

The truly shocking result of setting up an inhumane tabloid-pleasing asylum system:

From 20/11/2007:
Quote:
For the first time, Britain will tomorrow deport a failed asylum seeker back to Uzbekistan. Jahongir Sidikov, a member of the banned main opposition party Erk, is currently held in Harmondswoth Detention Centre. His ticket has already been purchased for deportation tomorrow.

Previously, as a matter of policy, this country did not deport political activists to Uzbekistan because they will face severe torture and probable death. The totalitarian Uzbek government has since become even more repressive, with widespread imprisonment, torture and extra-judicial killing of dissidents. The immigration officers who escort Jahongir onto that plane are in effect implementing capital punishment
Sending political dissidents back to repressive totalitarian regimes with ample torture chambers isn't exactly in tune with Gordon Brown's statement:

Quote:
I will stand up for British values
Since then he's had a stay while his case is 'reviewed', but there's surely nothing to review, it's illegal and immoral to deport people to places where they face persecution and death.

If the facts of the case are true then it's disgusting.
Then again, Churchill did much the same thing after WW2, on a much larger scale.....probably set the precedent.....

Yep straight of the boat and machine gunned in the dockyard in most cases, a sad chapter in this nations history

Re: "...it is Home Office policy to remove political dissidents to Uzbekistan"

They're a failed asylum seeker, where else are they supposed to be shipped off too.
Maybe they should have looked into the asylum procedures before choosing to come to the UK, it's not like Uzbekistan is close :/

Don't know anything about this guy but if indeed it is Home Office policy, perhaps he hasn't as much to fear as you think. I mean the Home Office isn't exactly renowned for the efficacious implementation of policy is it.

Deporting him is fine with me, not back to Uzbekistan but to the closest safe country, which was NEVER the UK.

The guy was here as a student for three years and was awarded a BSc, then married. If we were happy to have him here then, why not keep him here now?

Hell, Anyone who comes here to study and then stays should be welcome in the UK. Kicking out graduates seems quite dumb

He's an asylum seeker and shouldn't have been here in the first place, the concept of finding and settling in the first safe country is something that's ignored by most asylum seekers as they get everything handed to them on a plate in the UK.

Well he was here, and as I said studied and married. He wasn't hiding.

Are you saying that because UK immigration might have made a "mistake" this guy should be sent back to almost certain death?

Rare good ending to a story involving the Home Office - Mr. Sidikov's been granted asylum.
