Help needed

I have a HP Pavillion desktop PC and I gave the insides a good clean this morning. I also removed the CPU fan and heatsink to clear the dust and crap out if it. The problem I have is that when I removed it the CPU came out with it and it appeared stuck to the heat sink. Now I cannot get the CPU to sit back in properly and there is also a bar that gets in the way that locks the CPU onto the mainboard. Can anyone advise me on how to get this back on and sat correctly.

the CPU will be stuck to the heatsink with thermal paste most likely.

Assume you opened the bar before taking the CPU/heatsink out? If not you might have damaged the CPU pins.

Also, make sure the bar is open before trying to re-seat the CPU.

The bar is the locking mechanism to lock the CPU to the mainboard.

Also you may have to carefully peel the CPU off the heatsink and re-seat it without the heatsink attached. make sure you apply new thermal paste before sitting the heatsink back on the CPU.

You'll need to separate the CPU from the heatsink and hope that it and the motherboard haven't been damaged by pulling it off the motherboard. the top of the CPU and the underside of the heatsink will need thorough cleaning (gently though). You need to get some thermal compound from your local computer shop, remount the CPU to the motherboard, apply a bit of the compound and remount the heatsink.

The "bar" you mention is needed to lock the CPU into place on the motherboard.

Cheers. I knew the bar locked the CPU. What's the best way to gently remove the processor from the heatsink?

Whan its happened to me ive just used a small flat headed screwdriver. Check the pins and alignment before you replace the cpu make sure you use good paste when it goes back and learn a lesson from this

if any of the pins are busted your shafted lol

Its covered by extra warranty but I don't want to invalidate it. Will try and remove it but failing that I will make a claim. Zing your input is always appreciated as is everyone elses who has replied. Next time I will just leave well alone.

chances are dude you already have invalidated it. Next time to clean the hsf just removed the fan and carefully brush(I use a paintbrush but keep it away from any chips) the crud away into a vacuum cleaner(again carefully)

I found that a little bit of heat applied to the heatsink (hairdryer works fine) provides just enough 'loosening' effect to make the cpu peel off the heatsink easily.....no levering required....

If it was me and I found out a customer had done this then any warrenty would be null and void. I also would know if the heat sink paste was different to the AS I use.If you get away with it and it goes back togetherthen chances are unless you broke a case seal or thread lock then they wouldnt know

Thats why you should always run a system to temp before trying to remove a hsf

Ive found leaving the thing alone saves so much hassle

a bit of dust isnt going to hurt anything

Well I managed to seperate the chip from the hsf. I now get a no display. Obviously checked all the cables and re-seated the CPU and no joy. It appears that the whole PC is gubbed. Next time I will be more careful.
