Whats wrong with Vista?
I don't understand the stick that Vista gets. To me it seems a really good OS that has a lot going for it, admittedly its just a more polished version of XP AND they didnt deliver everything they intended but it works a treat and if im being honest, i've only ever seen a blue screen of death once in over a year of use (due to dodgy Nokia mobile phone drivers not vista).
People harp on about UAC, but once Vista is installed and all your apps are on you almost never see it and its a great extra layer of security. Tip:- turn it off, install your apps, turn it on, IF it bothers you that much.
So what is it that gets your goat about Vista, from where im sitting, i've been running the 64bit version (arguably the more difficult version of Vista due to it's signed driver requirements) since release, everything works, it looks lovely, its fast and it give me no jip.

The better question would be
Whats right with it.
Specs
amd 5400 x2 processor
3 gig of ddr2 800 ram in duel channel mode
2 300 gig sata drives.
2 ati 1950 gpu
Creative labs Xfi sound card.
All tested and working.
Runs like crap on Vista ultimate
Runs superb on XP, Linux, windows media centre, and server 2003. It never crashes or blue screens on these Os's
So why does it run like a dog on Vista, Why does it blue screen on vista, Why does stuff that worked fine on XP not work on vista. The list goes on. Oh and BTW i have tried 32 and 64 bit versions of vista there both CRAP.
BTW i have worked on Software and Hardware both as a hobby and as a job. I know how to install and configure a pc, I know how to fault find on Software and hardware, I design and install High Speed data networks for Large company's, So i don't think its me. I just cannot wait for Microsoft to fix Vista as it looks very good. Hopefully that MIGHT happen with SP1 but i am not holding my breath on it.
I think Microsoft have done another Windows ME
The best bit is i have a amd 2300 with 1 gig of ram and a Nvidia 5200 gpu that can run XP better and faster than Vista run's on my main machine .

Works fine here on the following....
Intel c2d e6420
p965 chipset
1.5GB RAM DDR800 (generic)
250GB sata II drive
Geforce 7950GS
Onboard sound
Not only does it work fine but it works considderably faster than XP did on the same system. I have found that Vista basic on my single core laptop only just works ok, it used to be horrific when I only had 512MB but now ive got 2GB its better, though if I'm honest I think dual core should be a requirement for vista. Unless Im wrong and its just my laptop that suffers?
By the way how do you get 3GB in dual channel? Sureley thats 3 1GB sticks in single channel? I thought you needed pairs of sticks to run dual channel?

Yes you are correct on the memory i should have said 2 gig dual however i have just upgraded to 3 gig which at the moment has put me back to single channel. I have run Vista on another machine as well and i saw a marked speed reduction on that machine as well i also have bench marks somewhere that showed the marked reduction in speed from Xp to vista. I have a few machines here at the moment and the linux machine running Ubuntu is the one i prefer to do my general surfing on due to its speed.

You could be right on the drivers however for a operating system that has supposed to have been tested more than any other it well grips me that i have such a hard time from it, When other Os's run smooth .
The OP asked was gripes people so i said what gripes me about Vista. . I understand it can run fine for some, But it can also run crap for others, Just like VM's broadband.

I've tried it on much higher specs than his (intels new true quad core) 8gb ddr2, 5x500gb raid, 8800gtx.
And it ran like crap.
That's with search indexer switched off, as with system restore and half the other crap bloat that comes with vista.
switch aero off to decide if vista is faster, you soon notice its not. (its "basic" interface is clumsy, messy, ugly, and slow) and aero is seriously no good if your multitasking, gets annoying.
Apps take alot longer to install on vista.
P.S Anyone with an nvidia chipset, really, its not worth even going near vista, their drivers are WAAAAAAY below sub-par, giving you a very bad experience.
Apps run slower on vista.
Its Buggy.
/End rant

Re: Whats wrong with Vista?
Have you checked the Vista Performance and Reliability Tools that are built in to vista?.
There are a huge number of monitoring options to find out what is causing the problems.
Start > Control Panel > System and Maintenance > Performance Information and Tools

Re: Whats wrong with Vista?
There are issues with vista but I think most of the bad feeling is disappointment it isn't as huge an improvement as people expected. Windows has a lot of compatibility baggage which is starting to show when you compare it to conceptually newer OS's like MAC.

Re: Whats wrong with Vista?
The only problem I have is the Forceware drivers. They say Vista ready on the Nvidia site, I done a full format, installed the nForce 4 drivers then the latest display driver and the bloody thing didnt want to know after a reboot. Kept moaning my display drivers were fubard.
Went back to XP after that... much better os imho.
