Question Latest & greatest wireless routers ....

I'm running an old Belkin wireless router, model number F5D7230-4. It has been great for many years. I get a really good range with it - my laptop works just fine from my garage 30m distant from my house! The built-in firewall has kept us safe from all evil

However, it seems that time has come for an upgrade. I've got VM XL broadband. With a PC directly connected to the cable modem (255 model) I get up to 13Mb/s download. Same PC via the router sees 9Mb/s, and a wirelessly connected PC in another room now never achieves more than 4Mb/s.

I recall reading somewhere that older wireless routers had a limitation to the rate at which they could share the web connection? If so, I guess that this is what I'm seeing (the wireless network connection reports a LAN speed on that same PC of 54Mb/s, so it's not the actual wireless link itself).

I was never aware of the wireless PCs being slower on the web with the old modem on ntl 4Mb/s.

So, if I'm to buy a new wireless router, I might as well get the latest and greatest!

All the recommendations I've been able to find in the forum are for 54Mb/s routers.

I don't want to buy a new model based upon what appears to be a good specification only to then find some new problem.

A quick look in the web shops tonight shows for example the D-Link DIR-655 with up to 300Mb/s wireless; up to 5 times the range of g routers; gigabit to the wired PCs; 11 year warranty; easy wizard; install in seconds - is it too good to be true!?!?!??

Is anybody out there sharing XL successfully? (seeing same speeds on wired and wireless PCs)
And achieving faster than 54Mb/s wireless links?
And good wireless range?

Re: Latest & greatest wireless routers ....

Before I downgraded from 20mb I had exactly the same router as yourself, and could acheive 20mb with no issues. What security is the router running ?

Re: Latest & greatest wireless routers ....

I've just had a good fiddle with all the security options, I even went as far as all shields down; turning the router firewall off, no wireless security, no MAC filtering, broadcasting the SSID ...

No significant improvements.
12 speed tests throughout various states of security varied 2.3 to 4.3 Mb/s.
