Virgin broadband and an Asus WL-500g router
Hi
I have just had Virgin Broadband installed at my new house, and am trying to get it to work with my Asus WL-500g wireless router.
The broadband works, i.e. if I connect my laptop directly to the modem provided by Virgin, I can happily surf away, but I cannot get my router to talk to my modem. I have read lots of threads on this forum, and most people with this problem can solve it by switching everything off, connecting it, and then switching everything back on in the correct order (modem-router-laptop). This isn’t the case here.
I did have this configuration in my old house, where my broadband supplier was NTL. Here, I needed to put in the MAC address of the computer that I registered the broadband with. Is this the case here?
Reading one thread on this forum, it did say that the lights on my Virgin modem should be flashing if the modem and router are connected and both are switched on. This doesn’t happen on mine.
Can anyone help. I’m sure I’m doing something wrong that is obvious. I am pretty good with computers (I work in IT and I have built quite a few systems from scratch in the past). This is all quite embarrassing!!!
Thanks in advance,
Rob

It sounds like you might need to clone the MAC address in the router. There should be an option in its configuration page to do this.

It shouldn't be necessary to clone a mac address into the router, but it's worth a try. Before that I'd do a full factory reset on the router so any settings you might have retained from your old network are cleared.
Also worth trying the most simple thing - a different ethernet lead.

Re: Virgin broadband and an Asus WL-500g router
Thanks guys, but unfortunately it still doesn't work. I know that the leads I'm using work fine, and I've tried cloning the MAC address. Firstly, I don't think I should need to do this as you don't have to 'register' with Virgin broardband like I had to with NLT, and secondly, you need to put a hostname in along with the MAC address - which I don't have with Virgin anyway.
I've done numerous factory resets, but still no joy. My computer happily talks to the router, but my router does not want to acknowledge my modem.
Any more ideas, it's driving me mad?

Re: Virgin broadband and an Asus WL-500g router
I've got a Netgear wgt624 and a new virgin media account with a sony vaio laptop. i've got the same problem and the wife's getting fed up with the cable running the length of the house from the ntl box to the laptop in the back office.
i tried different settings like mac cloning, password required (i tried my username and account password/registered name and pin number from the welcome letter), i tried no password required.
i can communicate with the router on wireless and can connect with cable into the back of the vaio and get internet ok.
i tried the correct order of connecting and power-on but still can't get the router to connect to the internet. please help!

ok - i fixed it now!
when i said i had done the power up in sequence - i forgot about the virgin modem and hadn't been cycling the power on that.
so i powered EVERYTHINg off, virgin modem, netgear router and pc
then i powered up - modem, router, pc in that order
router is set to "no login required", username entered (don't know if it's needed), and "use computer mac address" (likewise).

Re: Virgin broadband and an Asus WL-500g router
Robguest,
Did you manage to get the WL500g working? I have just had Virgin Media installed and am having exactly the same problem. I've left the whole setup powered down over night, but still no luck.
I phoned the premium rate helpdesk, who sort of indicated that they could help, but advised that wireless was not supported by VM. They gave me three DNS IPsto enter in the router, I only have space for two IPs, but they don't work.
A relative of mine asked me to set up a new router on a NTL connection a few months ago, the netgear router she bought worked first time with no powering down, etc., so I'm wondering whether there is something strange going on the Scientific Atlanta modem. I manage a successful Ethernet connection with the laptop I used the registation software on, but the second laptop cannot even obtain an IP from it.
All very frustrating!

Re: Virgin broadband and an Asus WL-500g router
All sorted now. WL500g needed a complete factory reset. Connected first time with modem.
