Re: Mac OS 10.5 to be released 26th October

I got it for £60 Still, for a OS upgrade it's not that overpriced.

Re: Mac OS 10.5 to be released 26th October

i paid about that for a full OEM version of vista.

and think about it, your paying for upgrades to things like your web browser, email, chat software etc.

normally most folk, like firefox just give these away for free, but apple puts it all in a package and charges you for it.

Firefox has income from different sources and only produces a browser. Not a OS. Not all software should be free. But yes you paying for a upgrade to a whole load of apps including core OS apps like Spotlight, Finder, Spaces, and all the other apps then there is the underlining OS tech 64 Bit and Multi-core support with new frameworks and such. Also, new apps like Time Machine.

Re: Mac OS 10.5 to be released 26th October

i have no issue with the OS itself, just the cost to upgrade things

even MS gives away IE7 to XP users and such.

i think you would be hard pushed to argue that apple dont overprice their mini upgrades just to push cash out of its loyal followers.

Re: Mac OS 10.5 to be released 26th October

The upgrades are quite decent sized, I mean this one is pretty good. 2 1/2 years or so since Tiger. MS aimed and are now aiming to do the same thing. Having a collection of smaller releases more often. It also helps avoid shaking up the landscape to much so you dont have the migration problems vista had. Apple also are quite keen to keep OSX advanced.

But if you look at 10.5, I think you would be hard pushed to suggest those should all be free upgrades. Also Apple gave Safari 3.0 to 10.4 users. MS are not giving all the features away to XP users neither are Apple giving all away their features away.

Re: Mac OS 10.5 to be released 26th October

Actually, the thing I most want to test is the revised security system which apparently includes Application Sandboxing. Well, I don't *want* to test it, but I'll need to, as we'll probably be using Leopard in the Lab next year.

I missed by 10 days, the original US apple site suggested that anyone with purchase in US from 01-09-2007 would qualify for the cheap upgrade providing they purchased in the states which I did (Tax Free). When I'd returned with credit card the US site was also 01-10-2007 for a cheaper upgrade.

Ordered anyway - although play.com are doing it for £5 cheaper than apple.

Re: Mac OS 10.5 to be released 26th October

I am on 10.5 now. It's pretty awesome! Only downsides are the lack of a arrow in the dock so you know which apps are open. Need to tab to see that now.....

Best things are the new unified appearance, spaces is cool, finder and quick view are very very cool

Re: Mac OS 10.5 to be released 26th October

Apparently, we do have a Leopard Server 10.5 disc somehwere I should be getting at some point. Don't know when I'll get access to either that or the leopard upgrade though. AFAIK, I am supposed to be getting both.

Re: Mac OS 10.5 to be released 26th October

Quick View also works for Music and some video files. It really does display many different files types and does it VERY quickly. Instantly. I can preview word documents and so forth at a snap, same with cover flow which is also very quick.

Is it generating previews on the fly, or has it been making a catalogue in the background?
