Router/speed issues

Does anyone know whether a Netgear WGR614 (v7) will support speeds of 20Mb from VM?

I have been pulling my hair out over this for weeks now and cannot seem to get to the bottom of it.

I am on a cable connection with VM and am supposed to be getting 20Mb speeds. As I have never had anything like this, my average is about 5Mb (I live in Shipley nr Bradford) I took it up with Virgin who eventually agreed that my old modem was faulty and they replaced it FOC. Engineer came out and fitted it but wouldn't check any speeds, he just said that this new modem "should" improve things.

It didn't, but I eventually found that my old router would only support up to about 7 or 8 (according to SMC's tech support people).

So I bought a new Netgear one, but things haven't improved at all.

I can confirm that this is through a wired connection to the router, not a wireless one.

Re: Router/speed issues

Check your download speeds with the cable modem directly connected to a PC and take measurements at various times of the day if possible. This should help you to eliminate the router or otherwise as the cause of your lower than expected speeds.
