Philips DVDR3570H hard drive/ dvd recorder

Hi All

I am thinking of buying a Philips DVDR3570H hard drive/ dvd recorder

Is anybody using one of these with V+ and does it work ok?

unless you are going to use it for backup i dont see how this could enhance your experiance as you could only record what your watching unless you record the off airs

Just for info, I did make the purchase last night.

The only reason I made the purchase is that my 2.5 year old video/ dvd recorder was faulty and I got a voucher for £150 to buy a replacement. I got a price match and paid £180 for the Philips.

I don’t use videos anymore so went for this machine. I only have a V+ so did not need to worry about the fact that it is only an analogue tuner.

For anybody thinking of making a similar purchase, primarily for archiving of programs from the V+, so far it seems quite nifty:

160GB hard drive
Multi dvd format including dual layer
Editing modes for both hard drive and dvd recording

The really nice touch….it has a satellite box recognition function, which means that if you leave in standby, it will automatically recognize when you archive from the V+ box to hard drive on the Philips.

I did 6 programs last night easy as pie.

You can archive to the Philips whilst still watching recorded V+ programs

Once archived to the Philips, (it did the 6 programs as one recording, ) you can then divide the recording as required, including deleting the 1 and 2 minutes at front and end of programs, hiding out the breaks and naming the titles, which can then be filed by genre.

Once edited on the Philips hard drive, you can copy programs from hard drive to DVD, and the nice bit here is it burns at 4x minimum speed, which you can’t do from V+

Other nice touches: it has a 6 hour live tv buffer for those who might need it, (as opposed to ?1 hour? On V+) and also has a partition for photos/ mp3s and divx files.

As it even has a usb port you can literally take music/ photos on a memory stick, (apparently up to 10GB) copy to hard drive and then have a slide show with music backing. Also you can of course do the reverse.

In summary, this machine does seem to nicely compliment the V+ particularly for archiving.

Hi there,

i've got a small problem with this DVDrecorder.. it's when i'm trying to copy/burn the recorded movie on a dvd (tried all formats +/-) .. it's copied correctly and can be played on the recorder. But it cannot be played on any other DVD recorder i tried several including pc.. the respond was something like invalid title or on pc it was showing me a blank dvd..

can anyone help me with this plz? is there something i could do like first name the recorded file before burning or something else?

ahh i've just found out that its a software problem.. the current software cannot close the dvds after burning and that's why it could be played only on the same recorder or on a DVDrecorder on your PC..

Does anyone know if there's a new software already which enables closing the dvds?

or could u recommend me a software through which i can close them via DVD-recorder on a pc?

Hi. I suppose you did finalize it ? It won't play on another recorder until you've done that. Put the DVD in, then press edit on your remote. Use arrow keys to select Finalize ...... job done.

Hi all

I thought that following my initial praise of the 3570, I had better do a follow up....

Sorry to say but I had to take the Philips back.

I had a problem where it simply kept refusing to switch on and I had to keep re-booting at the plug.

Although the convenience of the hard drive was great as you could bulk transfer from V+ and then split into separate recordings, in the end I went for a normal DVD recorder. I swapped for a Panasonic DMR-EZ27EB. I am very pleased with the new recorder. It is a similar price to the Philips, but is much nicer quality. (No rubbery keyed remote control for a start - very irritating on the Philips when renaming titles!)

The bells and whistles of the Philips were nice, but the Panasonic works well and is also A HDMI upscaler.

Hope somebody finds this useful.

Have you solve your problem? Please try to upgrade your firmware, it will work.

Hi Everybody,
I wonder if anyone can help me. How do I set a playlist for divx video files playing from the hard drive. If I start at the first track they play one after the other automatically, but if I start halfway through the list it just plays the one file then stops. Any ideas?

Don't buy this product!

It has a very slow and extremely clumsy user interface, and the remote is awkward in design and is slow in responding.

At one time all my files on the HDD were suddenly deleted as a result of an error in the firmware when dividing and deleting recorded material on the HDD.

I just upgraded to the latest version of the firmware and haven't seen any major improvements. Channel sorting/seeking function is a pain.

I have a SONY RDR-HXD870 recorder, which has all of the functions listed above and then some.

It also plays DivX files burned onto DVD from the PC, and upscales DVDs and recorded programmes to hi-def.

Around £200 on Amazon.co.uk, and highly recommended!

I am now on my third Philips DVDR 3570H and I have had the same problem with all 3 and was wondering if anyone could assist me?

When I record things straight to the Hard Drive, and then playback the picture will occasionally freeze. What happens is the picture will freeze but sound carry on for a split second, then stop momentarily and then start again.

Also a couple of times I have set it up to record from the Virgin box but when I review it, the screen is blank. Recorder has came on, recorded the correct channel for the correct time, but just total blank screen almost as if no signal had came through?

I have updated it to the latest software. Problem is I like the Philips, I like the features but this is a real pain.

I have it connected to both my standard Virgin box (Explorer 4200DVB) by SCART and also to the Terrestial TV through RF.

This sticking happens on channels recorded via the SCART and also via the RF. I have tried unplugging one of these whilst I record from the other but that makes no difference. I have viewed the program live whilst it is recording and the picture has been fine but then when I replay the recording it keeps sticking.

Does this suggest that its the DVD Recorder that is faulty, have I really been so unlucky to have 3 different Recorders (albeit the same model) all faulty?

Has anyone else experienced this or any advice that can be offered?

I have the same problem you describe.
Buffer playback causes a freeze with sound continuing then about a 2 sec pause. This is quite random.
The only way I can stop this from happening is to backup all recordings, then start again. I believe it is caused by a fragmented recording issue, I have asked Philips if they can provide a feature to defrag the hard drive, still waiting for a reply.
The 6hr buffer is recording to HDD, but if you have deleted recordings then space on the HDD becomes fragmented and the buffer, while continueing to to fill up has to jump around the drive for space. Try contacting Philips and asking them to implement HDD defrag feature.

I've got a similar issue but not quite the same with mine. The picture kind of freezes then plays catchup and the sound is muted, it lasts about 5-10 seconds. Seems to happen every 10 minutes or so on many things I record. I've sent it in for repair and they had it for 2 weeks then insisted it was all good. Its not any better for it.
