Question A problem with ADSL

A quick question over a problem that my sister has with her ADSL connection...I have not seen it for myself, but from what I have been told, the problem is this...

She has Sky, a basic adsl modem and a phone connected upstairs. What is happening is that anyone who tries to ring in, goes straight through to the voicemail. She has tried each one separately and the problem seems to occur when only the modem is connected.

The connection works, but it is acting like dial-up in that you cannot use the phone at the same time.

She has rung BT and they said that the line is fine.

I am thinking that it is either the modem or the filter.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Re: A problem with ADSL

not sure of your set up, but does she have a filter in place?
when using the telephone and ADSL broadband, you normally have a filter plugged into the telephone socket.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that, yes it has a filter. The setup has been working fine for 2 years now. It just started on Wednesday.

She is on Tiscali. I cannot remember the model. It was one of those freebies that were part of the sign-up deal.

I'm afraid she's going to have to phone Tiscali, not as easy as it sounds.

If she's on Tiscali's LLU service, I'm not sure why BT would have told her the condition of the line, as Tiscali are responsible for it and not BT.

Has she replaced the filter, just to rule it out as a possible cause?

I'd start with the filter, then the modem if you can find a spare to test with..

Filters do go faulty, I had one fall to bits inside (mind you it did sit in the bottom of a bag being carted here there and everywhere for ages so not exactly the normal usage for them..)

Indeed! The reason I mentioned the modem, was so she could access her line stats, as this may give clues as to the state of the line.

if its a voyager 105 usb meny i think its a case of bring up the adsl status info by clicking the icon in the systray and then hit ctrl+f1 to get a hidden menu with all the stats and stuff... (i read it on the internet some time ago but i think i remembered it right)

Been a while since i've had to do that since the modems we use at work have a different driver to be used with the ADSL testing software.

and its been a while since i've encountered a usb modem since most people I know are using some form or router or another.

Sounds about right.

http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.htm

I was going to post the link anyway, so Mals' sister can get some stats up.

I think that's probably where I actually saw how to do it

She didn't know what was wrong with the phone line, so she rang BT, as she has the phone with them. I don't know if she is on the LLU or not.

It was only after trial and error, that we figured out that it was the modem.

I will try a new filter, to see if it is that first, as that is the cheapest to buy.

Thanks everybody, for your help

Re: A problem with ADSL

If it does turn out to be a duff modem you can buy usb modems for less than £10 or routers for ~ £20 - 30

Or could try asking your ISP to send a new one.
