I still cant get this, says its not available in my country and i cant see anywhere in steam where i can see what country im supposed to be in or set it.

I cant see anywere to change your country either. I had a look at there support page but it didnt really help. Try contacting them through there support system and see if they can help. Only other way is to buy a hard copy from the shops.

the hard copy PC version isnt in the shops now though is it?
i thought its not due until 18th oct, and even then, i dont seem to be able to get a commitment they (several retail shops around here)will stock it on that day.

I wouldn't buy a hard-copy unless your prepared to make a new steam account if neccecery...
Reason I say is It wouldn't surprise me if you bought a hard copy installed it popped your key into steam only to be told "this is not available in your country"

Yep its not out yet. Was just a surgestion for when it is. Like dragon say's though you dont want to get that pop-up so I would surgest contacting there support team am sure they will be able to help you out.

Anyone got the box version? What's the deal, can it be installed off-line or do you have to install with a www connection and then play in off-line mode. Or is all that just related to the steam version?

If its anything like the HL2 boxed copy the files are installed encrypted stream then goes online and authenticates it and only then does it decyrpt the files...
Not sure about the console versions though....... maybe a thought if you happen to have a 360 (don't bother with the PS3 version i hear its rubbish, they outsourced its creation to EA who did a very poor job of porting it, lots of slowdowns by all accounts).
