another linux question

hey gurus....

ok, sorry but I am still messing with linux, as you know.

but everytime I load up, I get a box loading saying it is trying to mount a cd hdbc1 but I looked in my control centre and I can't find anything to turn this off.

plus I have a cd rom and a dvd rom, they are hdc & hdd respectively.

I will boot up again, and screen shot it

ik

sorry I got it wrong, it does try to mount a cd rom

Re: another linux question

Is the "b" in hdbc1 a typo as your screenie shows dev/hdc......

If you have a cd in the drawer it will automatically mount in most cases anyway as far as i understand. Is that not whats happening???

Re: another linux question

Same happens here, if the unit has a disk in it Linux will try to mount it so that you can access/ use it. It should ignore it if it's empty.

Re: another linux question

Easily done Ik If a CD or DVD is present then Linux will try to mount the drive so that the information can be accessed, normally this then creates a link on the desktop to the drive. You can stop the link from being created on the desktop through a setting but to be honest it's useful to keep as it's a reminder to check the drive before you rebot lol

That's not as bad as the Plus.net engineer who formatted the live mail server instead of the new one!

Re: another linux question

sorry for a hijack here . Installed ubuntu using Wubi. Now the ati driver said it was reserved or something so I ticked it to install and it did. Now I want to run the fancy gui but it says extension not available, downloaded newest ati driver but cant work out what to do with it, I typed what it asked in the instruction on site but could not open it

edit it was restricted driver

before the res would stick at 1024 with the restricted driver its 1650:1050

I got the nvidia driver off automatix but i'm not sure if the ati one is on there

Trying for beryl zingle?

Its nice providing you don't go OTT and turn all the effects on.... made that mistake before its pretty for about 5minutes then it gets VERY annoying.

Re: another linux question

Thats the points the effects will not switch on you click desktop effects and it says composite extrension unavailable. Now im guessing this is a driver issue so I downloaded the ati package now nothing opens it. On ati it gives a terminal command which does not work. The older drivers that are in archives nothing opens either

Re: another linux question

Have you tried Envy? Worked a charm for the Nvidia driver recently on mine and supports ATI drivers to. You might need to drop out of X first to remove the drivers and reinstall from scratch though. (This falls under the heading if nastiness that puts people off Linux we were discussing on the other thread )

Odd, I don't have any computers running linux that have ATI cards in them as I replaced the x1300 in my dell with my 7800GT from my old pc.

While the x1300 is in the old pc it only has winxp on it and as my housemate is busy playing WOW On it. (I let him borrow it on extended loan since its otherwise just gathering dust)

Ctrl + alt + f1 - F8 where as 1-5 are terminals and F8 is X (i think)

to kill and restart x

ctrl + alt + backspace (handy if the gui locks up)
