I have seen installs like that here in the UK and I'm not even a tech, just a customer.

Re: this not a vm install it a few pics of

Is it my imagination, but it seems that the guys (across the pond) really have a propensity for sticking things on tops of poles don't they? You can see this in many movies which show (outside) shots of urban areas - Looks like a right monkey's lunch.

Mind you (funnily enough), the installation looks very similar to the old Redifusion link that was installed in many homes (within the UK) during the early seventies.

This was (also) a cable network, mounted above the ground (on poles and between properties), but (unlike today's systems) didn't use set top boxes, instead used a rotary selector switch mounted on the wall, along with a socket for the TV's aerial cable to attach. Ground breaking technology (then), with a selection of three TV and four (BBC) radio channels - whoopee!

Things have moved on a little since then.

Yet, oddly enough, in the US, cable is the method of choice for pay-tv viewing, whereas in the UK, burying thousands of miles of cables has saddled Virgin Media with a generation's worth of debt, virtually guaranteed that no new network will ever be built, and given Sky a clear run at the majority of the households in the country.

Re: this not a vm install it a few pics of

This is true, but I often wondered whether the cable network could be extended via the use of Microwave links. All that would be needed would be masts (existing cellphone would probably do) for the transmitters and receiving antennas mounted on top of people's houses, so long as they were line of sight. Due to the frequencies involved (those on people's houses) would be very small and hardly noticeable.

Not (exactly) a cable network as such but certainly viable and another way of keeping SKY at bay by giving people another alternative option.
