No. What you need is a NAS (network attached storage) which can cost alot. Cheapest ive seen is about £50

This was £50 in the sale but has gone up now. Even then you had to provide your own HDD

Why not just rig up a spare PC as a server with a massive HDD?

Thanx ( ) | of coarse you can, find somebody that's replacing their PC with a newer one and see if you can have the old one off them, they'll be probably be glad to get rid of it.

Then, download FreeNAS, install it on recently aqquired PC, and your off!

 | 'course, it'll use more electricity than a self-contained NAS..

that entirely depends on what hardware your running it on.
Something like the Compaq SFF that i've had running at home as NAS uses the same as the Buffalo linkstation that we've got at work(tested by a bloke from the carbon trust).

Edit, although I do accept the point that an average PC used as NAS would use a lot more that an "off the shelf" NAS device.

ok, dont think anyone has got spare computers hangin around anyway. someone in my family has got about 20 PCs in her house, if she dosnt want them she'll do that for herself anyway. Or she'll probably sell them. Its more than likely she will use them as servers because she is memory mad. Shes got loads of hard drives.
