Remote Access To emails

Hi All First of all, as you will prob gather I am new to this. My prob is that I have a Virgin email address which emails come into on this computer but when I go onto Virgin Media's site from elsewhere the inbox is empty. How do I get the many emails I have on my home computer to show up in the Virgin Media inbox?
Thanks

Re: Remote Access To emails

Depends if you have set it to leave a copy on the server or not. How are you accessing them on your Home PC? If it's through outlook or outlook express you have probably downloaded the emails from the server.

Re: Remote Access To emails

you would need to leave them on the server (an option in your email programme) to be able to view them in webmail

Re: Remote Access To emails

What I have done recently, it is a bit technical but very good once done is set up a program on my Linux box called "Fetchmail" - yes it does what it says on the tin and then set up a IMAP4 server, Fetchmail downloads my email every 5 minutes and using the IMAP4 server, I can view my email from anywhere!

Re: Remote Access To emails

Hi Thanks to all your good advice regarding email remote access. What I should have said is that I know nothing of the technical aspects of this. You say leave the emails on the server. I have no idea even how to start to do this. Do I do it from Windows Outlook or is there somewhere else to go? You seem to indicate that there is a choice to do this but I can't see where. Also if they are on the server how will I be able to see them and still leave them on the server for remote access? I find it all very confusing!!!
Hope I'm not being too much of a nuisance.
Thanks

Re: Remote Access To emails

you go into your email program and under your account go into advanced and leave messages onthe server

unless you delete messages they will stay on the server and build up taking up your emailbox space

The Server is Virgin Media. All your Mail is stored there (like a Post Office). Your Laptop/PC will use Outlook & everytime you click "Send / Recieve" it will connect to the Server (Post Office) & Dowmload the eMail. (Just like a postman delivering mail to your door).

But to leave the mail at the Post Office & have it delivered to your door you need to TICK the Box in Outlook to say "Leave Copy on the Server" as Richy99 said. Not many do this so its not always Ticked, you have to select that option....

After 90 Days the eMails are DELETED off the Server by NTL/Virgin, so if you want the eMails to be SAVED forever you will be best getting a Yahoo or GMail account (Yahoo Mail Plus is $20 a year) and that will allow you to use POP 3 access (thats how Outlook connects to eMails) & Yahoo has an UNLIMITED Mailbox so you can leave EVERY Message there for use when not at the Laptop or Home PC.

Re: Remote Access To emails

Just had an eMail off the Member but I cant reply via Forum as he Refused to allow Members to eMail him.

- Load Outlook Express
- Go to Tools & then Accounts
- Click on the Mail tab at the top of the Newly opened Popup
- Click on the Mail Account you want to EDIT (inside the box it lists 1 or more accounts you've added)

- Click Properties Button (on the Right)
- Click on the Advanced tab on the newly opened Popup
- Tick the Box that says: Leave a Copy of Message on the Server
- Click OK, then Close the other PopUp window & try & Recieve your eMails.

Re: Remote Access To emails

fredav1 suggested it was Outlook. In that case, for version 2003:
Go to tools menu, email accounts. View or change existing email accounts should be selected. Hit next, double click the entry for the account you wish to edit. click "more settings..." button, select "advanced" tab, it's the third box up from the bottom.
Note that if either of the other two boxes are ticked, the messages will still be deleted.
