Problems with BT ADSL

If there's anyone out there with exprience of BT Broadband and the Home Hub, I could use some advice. I recently upgraded my package, having been quite happy with BT previously, to a new Home Hub and increased from a 2Meg to an 8Meg package.
Installation was fine, and a speed change has definately gone through, however, on checking config details on the modem, I get the following info that seems to suggest my line is configured to no greater than 4Meg, (please correct me if wrong);

I've also tried BTs recommended speed tester which gave the following result;

All other speed tests yield similar results. I've also found that the connection can be a lot more variable than before, which doesn't seem to be a speed issue, more that the whole thing can stall for a minute or two when browsing.

So...

1) Does it look like my connection has been configured wrongly by BT?

2) Is it worth struggling my way through a discussion with one of their Indian call centre staff? (ie are they likely to change anything?)

Any advice gratefully received.

Re: Problems with BT ADSL

Unfortunately due to the limitations of ADSL, the further you are from the telephone exchange the slower it becomes.

Check http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/maxdsl2.htm for more information.

Re: Problems with BT ADSL

MaxDSL works by first establishing the maximum stable speed for your service. It's self-configuring to that extent. The process can take up to a couple of days during which your speeds can wobble up and down a bit. Once the system has established the best speed for your line, however, it will store a config file at the exchange and only give you that speed from then on. You will be able to see what speed has been set in that file by viewing your router's set up page and looking for the sync speed. (This may be what you're showing in your screen shots but they're being blocked by our office systems for some reason). The sync speed is then your maximum throughput, but still isn't guaranteed - network congestion can and will mean that at any given time you are actually experiencing slower speeds than this.

The maximum speed available to you is affected by factors such as the length of the phone line between you and the exchange, and the quality of the line.

Actually the ip profile is the maximum throughput which is slightly lower than the sync speed.

If its on an extension pop the facia off (if possible) and remove the ringing wire leaving just 2 and 5 connected, do the same as the master

Also BT traffic shape in the evenings although they won't admit that.
