Interesting reason for terrorism
I know it's the Daily Mail but:
Quote:
When I was still a member of what is probably best termed the British Jihadi Network - a series of British Muslim terrorist groups linked by a single ideology - I remember how we used to laugh in celebration whenever people on TV proclaimed that the sole cause for Islamic acts of terror like 9/11, the Madrid bombings and 7/7 was Western foreign policy.
By blaming the Government for our actions, those who pushed this "Blair's bombs" line did our propaganda work for us.
More important, they also helped to draw away any critical examination from the real engine of our violence: Islamic theology.

Re: Interesting reason for terrorism
But then many many muslims, by far the majority, are not terrorists and are not supportive of terrorists. 'Islamic theology' as a reason for terrorism is like people saying that Christain theology is a reason for something they do which others dislike.
Its how people decide to follow a religion thats makes a difference. The scripts which they read can be taken a number of ways and most take it that killing another human is wrong, some obviously take it another way.
Poverty and exclusion seem to be a much bigger cause.

Food for thought
Now, if any high ranking idiot in whatever church can come out with tripe like that, why blame theology? I mean, It's all open to interpretation anyway, which means you can make it as vengeful as you want it to be?

Re: Interesting reason for terrorism
I am sure it is written in the koran about "spreading the word of allah by the pen or the sword" or something like that i am sure one of the islamic members can correct\clarify that. For me as an atheist i believe all religion is about total control and it is one of the reasons why i do not subscribe to any religion.
Different religions use different methods some subtle some not but control is the central point of it all. At the end of the day a good person is a good person because of personal choice and by making the correct decisions for themselves nothing nauseates me more then going to a funeral and hearing how god and a particular faith made someone a good person when you know they never really practised religion and never went to church.
It is stealing that persons way of living and what their life stood for corrupting it into some religious reason when the fact is they were a good person because they chose to be. By the same token terrorists are terrorists because they choose to be and choose to use violence to obtain their goals.

Re: Interesting reason for terrorism
Islamic theology?
All the Abrahamic religions basically say the same thing regarding opinions and tolerance to others/views. Its to do with the overlying culture. Its somewhat akin to Westboro Church and more mainstream Christianity.

Re: Interesting reason for terrorism
There was a good article this weekend (Telegraph or Times, I will try to find a link) that warned of confusing Islamists (fanatics with an extreme version of the Islam religion, who count nearly everyone, including moderate Muslims, as "the enemy") and Islam. I think they said equating Islamists with Islam is like saying all Christians are extreme right-wing gun-toting fundamentalist anti-abortion gay-bashing bigots, which we know is not true.

No, equating islamists with islam is like equating extreme right-wing gun-toting fundamentalist anti-abortion gay-bashing bigot christians with christianity....
They both exist and both view themselves as the true defenders of their faith...

True - thanks for pointing that out; but they are both equally wrong (imho).

Well said!
In my view all religions are about controlling people by brainwashing or fear, this can be tame as in most christian religion to the other end of the scale in the case of the smaller religion. Islam is certainly way up there with the extreme religions, why people are afraid of religion is a complete mystery to me.
