Actiontec GT701-WRU - cannot get wireless signal on laptop

Evening all,

Please could someone help me...I feel like I'm going mad

I have virgin 4mb b/band through their modem. This is my setup (apologies in advance but I felt like too much info was better than too little):

Modem connected to Netgear XE104 wall-plugged ethernet switch downstairs.
CAT5 cable running from switch into Actiontec GT701-WRU.
Another XE104 upstairs with CAT5 cable running into desktop pc.

Laptop = Thinkpad T42 with Centrino. Wireless card = Intel(R) PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B.

I recently moved house and have been having a nightmare with getting my wireless network back up again. I have reset the router (I now know this was a schoolboy error).

My first attempt was to plug everything in and see what happened. After a bit of help from VM Tech support all my wired stuff worked. After running a CAT5 cable from the switch into the ethernet port of the router I could pick up a perfect wireless signal (and got the 2 flashing computers in the system tray) but couldn't get on the internet - internet light on router was red.

I ran the Actiontec installation cd again which requires hardwiring (CAT5 from switch to ADSL port on router then CAT5 from ethernet port to laptop) and have a wired network, internet light is green but there's no wireless signal anymore!! Grrrrrr!

Can anyone help? My hairline is suffering.....

Are you using wireless encryption? If so, when you ran the router setup CD, did you set up the security in exactly the same way for the laptop card?

Sorry, had to ask...

Hi,

Thanks for the response.

I've not set up any encryption as yet. I wanted to get the signal first...one step at a time and all that!
