Sky BB Speed
Hi,
we're getting about 280kbps on both up and down on what is supposedly an 8meg connection. I'm 1.1km from the exchange, these are my stats;
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time WAN PPPoA 14727 18400 0 118 668 07:15:33 LAN 10M/100M 20132 15967 0 699 136 07:15:54 WLAN 11M/54M 1737 0 0 8 0 07:15:44
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream Connection Speed 288 kbps 288 kbps Line Attenuation 17.0 db 9.0 db Noise Margin 30.3 db 29.0 db
I was on the phone for about 30 mins to CS, where they assured me the line was fine etc.
How do I find if the problem is with my router as CS seem content enough leaving me with a near pre-historic connection.
TIA

Re: Sky BB Speed
You have excellent attenuation, you seem to have been capped by sky.
You will need to call them and check what they've set you to.

Re: Sky BB Speed
We've called them, and been told repeatadly that we're meant to be getting 8meg,
Is it possible that there's something up with the router?
Cheers.

Re: Sky BB Speed
Well its possible I guess. You could try following these instructions to extract the advanced stats and then post on this forum http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/

Re: Sky BB Speed
I've posted on those forums, but responses are a tad slow especially if you're as frustrated with slow speeds as I am.
I've tried connecting to the test socket, and trying what I think is a different microfilter. But I'm getting the same results.
Really don't know where to go from here. What do people mean when they say there are errors on the line?
Thanks

Re: Sky BB Speed
Really, really, looks like capping, as downquark1 said.
Your downstream attenuation is great, more than low enough for 8mbps (it's actually good enough for the full 16mbps, if you had Sky BB Max), & your downstream noise margin is excellent (due to the ridiculously low sync speed).
Errors: there's info in the first link posted by downquark1 (the stats instructions by mossywell).
Also worth a read of this: http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/speed...explained.html
You need to get onto Sky, & try & get through to "tier 3" support...

Re: Sky BB Speed
Cheers, I got through to tier 2. But he said that there was a cap at the local exchange, and someone had probably messed it up when ordering.
Said it should be sorted by tomorrow, and stable in 10 days.
Thanks again

Re: Sky BB Speed
Turns out things have changed, but not really to my advantage.
Most recent speed tests show;
241 Down
375 Up
Whilst the router stats page shows;
8096 Down
448 Up
What would cause this?
TIA

Re: Sky BB Speed
Hi,
OK Looking at the first bit it looks as though you're on Sky Connect, connecting via BT's equipment, and were originally put on their legacy 256kbps service.
Your service is currently slow as BT operate a 2 level capping system, where your download speed is obviously limited by the sync rate you can achieve with the exchange, which is in your case now 8096, but also by a router in BT's network.
BT have some kit which monitors your line and will (eventually) increase the cap that that router is placing on your line, which is at the moment 250kbps.
This excellent web page will explain things more clearly:

Re: Sky BB Speed
Don't expect anything spectacular. I've got an antenuation of 21db and they keep telling me I should expect anthing from 4 to 6 Mbit. The fact my line is constantly stucky at around 7 to 8Mbit makes me wonder a little if we're capped!
Quote:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6258 kbps 766 kbps
Line Attenuation 24.5 db 12.8 db
Noise Margin 7.8 db 11.5 db
|
Bear in mind it's a little late!

So how long should I expect to be on this speed (ha!) for?

Re: Sky BB Speed
Line Attenuation 17.0 db 9.0 db
if 17.0 is down id exspect you would get 24MB with Be*
