Democrats ignore Bush over Stem Cell Research
Democratics ignore Bush over Stem Cell Research
Quote:
The US House of Representatives has voted to ease restrictions on federal funds for stem-cell research, defying a veto threat by President George W Bush.
The Democratic-controlled House voted by 247 to 176 to pass the legislation, already approved by the Senate in April, and send it to Mr Bush's desk.
|
Obviously there is a high chance Bush will veto it, but he will do so with the Lowest approval ratings hes had and this is bound to be even more damaging to him. Even worse if they manage to override the veto and make him one dead(er) duck. Hopefully he will chicken out and pass the bill since the Democratics will likely just send it back and him during the election year when it will become even more damaging for the republicans (majority of americans support stem cell research).

Here's the link, btw

Good news, but prob. won't get anywhere.
He's vetoed a stem cell bill before, he's said he'll veto this one.
Unlikely for Congress to overrule it if he does veto it... would require a 2/3 majority in both the House & the Senate.

Re: Democrats ignore Bush over Stem Cell Research
It's a great shame the Senate can't get a 2/3 majority against Bush yet.
In other news, the immigration bill got thrown out, too. Bush's entire legacy will be a bankrupt country and the Iraq War. Worst President ever?

Re: Democrats ignore Bush over Stem Cell Research
The good news is all the leading candidates for their respective partys nominations are supporters of the stem cell research so as long as they maintain a democratic house after the next election then we will see a lot lot more money in stem cell research

Paragon of virtue, Dicky. He started to get the US *out* of Vietnam, in the end. Mind you, Dubya got out of Vietnam waaaaay before that, of course.
The whole lying-to-stay-in-office bit took the shine off him a bit. He also, of course, provided an excellent training ground in lies and manipulation for guys like Donald Rumsfeld.

Well, He's an Idiot. I guess Medical Research is less important that moral values? When you have a degenerative illness. I guess you can take confort in the moral values of your nation. All that caring about human life, in fact they care so much, they value it over a humans life.
What a waste of space, Still a year and a few months until the next election. Al Gore please. (although all the main candidates support stem cell research, its just Mr Religious Right who doesnt)

Tying this in with the 'Go To Work On An Egg' minor uproar, in the US it's offended Fox (and CBS) that a company wishes to advertise its condoms by linking condom use with sex. That's like advocating seat belt wearing without showing a moving car.
This is the same Fox that [fill in list of crimes, starting with the owner putting naked teenagers on Page Three...]...

What's hilarious are the adverts for erectile dysfunction medication recently on the FNC website.

Re: Democrats ignore Bush over Stem Cell Research
Well we have our own cretins here in the UK
Quote:
However, some campaigners insist the jab will encourage promiscuity among underage girls.
Stephen Green, of Christian Voice, said girls would assume they were protected against other sexually-transmitted conditions such as chlamydia, and that could make them infertile.
"I expect school health outreach workers from primary care trusts and the like will be giving Gardasil to girls behind their parents' backs," he said.
"Since the vaccine works best before the onset of sexual activity, they will be treating these girls, to put it bluntly, like tarts, saying they are lacking in self-respect and the basic morality required to keep their virginity.
"The message is one of despair, disrespect and low expectations."
|
Thankfully he is not in any position to actually veto these vaccinations.

Of course, underage teenagers don't already have sex (even in countries where religion is prevalent).

So, perhaps it would be good to actually educate kids on sex rather than tell them not to have it? Let's face it, often, the best way to persuade a kid to do something is tell them not to.

Re: Democrats ignore Bush over Stem Cell Research
Oh dear atheist god. Yet another idiot to add my idiot list, which is getting pretty big already.
What is this? Is this the same thing as the condoms in schools stuff they have in America? Do they really think that if you do not provide methods of protection then they wont have sex? Or do they just hate anything that could be seen as approving underage sex (even though it is not) and they place this moral highground above safety?
Like some kid at school is thinking "Well, I was considering not having sex until I was married! But now I am protected against HPV then what the hell!"
People with have underage sex. Either protection and education is provided and then at least its safe or it isnt and then its not safe. Thats all that happens, and thats all it is. You can either make it safe and protect them or you can say "Well it shouldnt happen!" and risk their lifes with the warped belief that its moral.
