wireless printing
 Ive asked this question in a number of shops and keep getting different answers, can I print wirelessly from a wireless laptop to a wireless enabled printer without the use of a router?.

I have seen a bluetooth adapter that fits into the parallel port of a printer on Dabs I think

I would think that a wireless printer still needs a router to connect to? I could be wrong...

In theory you could probably setup an Ad-Hoc (computer-to-computer) connection on the laptop and connect the printer to it, but it wouldn't be easy and probably would be pretty flaky even if it works. What's wrong with a long USB cable for when you need to print

Your laptop has a wireless network card so needs to connect to a wireless network with the printer attached to the network.

Never tried it, but if you don't have a router, you'd need to assign a fixed IP address to the laptop, and fixed IP to the printer wireless adaptor so they can "see" each other. Then in your printer settings on the lappy assign an IP port to the printer and see what happens. In that respect I can't see how working wireless is any different to a peer to peer wired network.

Laptop is in the living room next to my chair, printer (if I get one) would be in the kitchen, 3 dogs and a wife who doesn't like cables made me think of wireless printing, why should such a simple operation like sending data direct to a printer be so difficult or 'flakey'

Presumably the printer isn't entirely "wireless", as it must get power from the mains (unless it is battery powered). So, why not invest in a couple of Homeplug adapters: http://www.solwise.co.uk/net-powerline.htm
No flakiness whatsoever.

Good ol' dial up, I refuse to pay an 'up to' 8 meg price for a line which tests as 'up to' 256kb, which is why I don't have a router, but as my laptop is wireless I thought it would be simple and convenient to communicate wirelessly with a printer, but I don't want to invest in a wireless printer if it's not possible.
