Hooking up Virgin Media to PS3?

OK, i am at my girlfriends house and she knows nothing about NTL, how here internet works or well anything.

She got herself a PS3 and I am trying to hook it up, unfortunately she has a really old set top box. It has "cable and wireless" on the front.. i don't know how much boxes change..

Anyway she gets her internet through the back of her set top box, this then has a cross over cable which goes to her computer. At her computer end she has some usb converter. I'm not sure what this does.

What i want to do is plug the Playstation 3 directly into the NTL box. I have tried both the ethernet and cross over cables but have had little luck with either.

Does anyone know why this and how i could get it working?

If you need more information please ask and will supply it asap.

I am not sure if it is possible, but what you need to do is change the mac address of the ps3 so it is the same as the mac address of the usb/ethernet adaptor that your lady is using for the pc.

To find out the mac address of this, on the pc, open a command prompt (when it is connected to t'internet) and type ipconfig. It will show you a 12 digit hex address, which is the mac address of the ethernet adaptor.

Take a note of this one and then (if you can) type this into the ps3 as the mac address. If you can't change the mac address on the ps3, your other options are a) connect to the pc via ethernet or b) buy a router.

If your pc has an ethernet connection, you need to find out the mac address of the ps3, and then copy this onto the ethernet card of the pc. You then need to connect to the pc using ethernet and you will be prompted to register the device. Follow this through and you will then be able to hot swap between this ethernet connection and the ps3.

I bet it would be easier with a wii! :P
Do you get a light on the back of either boxes ethernet port when you have the box and the p$3 plugged into each other?

actually it wouldn't be any easier with a wii. it is the provisioning system for stb internet access that is causing the headaches here- exactly the same as it would for a wii.
