Re: Needs serious help

The WRT54GS was only recommended if you could have connected to it from your modem to the router by ethernet.

In your case, you would need an ADSL modem router.
I don't use ADSL but I'm sure someone will recommend some soon.

Yup. I am surfing on the internet myself looking for some viable adsl modem routers.

I hope someone gives me a useful advice regarding them.

Thanks a lot mate.

Re: Needs serious help

Happy to be able to help.

Whatever ADSL router you go for, you will probably have to contact your ISP and ask them for user name and password and they may ask you to enter a few settings.
This is quite easy and enables the new modem built into the router to connect properly.

Edit:

This info may be useful to you explaining what you can use. Just a quick guide....

Anyways, I found the following ADSL modems. Hope some1 could advice me on them.

Please recommend one. Or state your own.

Also, what would I need to buy to get my network setup as a whole.
  • One of the stated ADSL modem routers.
  • Wireless network cards for each pc.
I guess thats it. Am i missing something?

BTW., I have noticed that experts here are not using "ADSL anything" here. Is cable better than ADSl?

Put it this way. i'm stuck with ADSL because i'm in a new build apartment which cannot have cables running into it. As soon as cable is available to me - i'll be going straight back on it.

you are more likely to have problems with ADSL than Cable on the whole purely because of how the service is delivered its old hat technology . If your close enough to your exchange and have a good line ADSL can be fine . I know plenty of people who have admittedly slower speeds but have had no problems with their DSL in years

Re: Needs serious help

Yep, as Zingle says, it does depend on the line quality and how far you are from the exchange.

The list of equipment is pretty much correct.
- 1 wireless ADSL router
- PCI wireless cards for each of your PC's.
Check to see if the laptops are already wireless enabled. If they are not, then a wireless PCMCIA card or wireless usb stick.

- One ethernet cable. Costs about 50p. You might even get one bundled.
You need to use it to set up your connection once. Then you can go wireless.
