Re: Broadband Sharing by Router - A Step By Step Guide

The article is excellent and very informative for me as a new member. However my problem is that I am about to set up a home Wi-Fi network (2 PC's and a Laptop). I currently have an NTL set top box which delivers Internet via the inbuilt modem by cable to one of my PC's. I then share the Internet connection with the other PC by cable and hub method.

Can someone confirm that my understnding of my requiremensts are correct:

Wi-Fi router WAN port connected by cable to the NTL set top box.
Each PC or Laptop to have a Wi-Fi card installed in it plus software

No cable connection between Wi-Fi Router and any PC
No need to use NTL Broadband Installation software on any PC or Laptop

Is this the correct configuration or am I wrong somewhere, I do not wanmt to buy Wi-Fi hardware which is incorrect for my needs.

Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Charlie

Yes you are correct.

You may need to temporarily connect a PC via cable to a router LAN port to do initial router configuration.

It might be also worth having an ethernet cable to connect a computer to, in case you change the wifi settings and disconnect yourself. (I've done it).
I leave the desktop connected to the router by ethernet, and have the two laptops on wifi.
Don't forget to set the security (change SSID name, MAC address filters and passwords).

Your not the only one....

If you want a good encyption code on the wireless.

Although only problem is you then need to save it somewhere becuase you don't have a chance of remembering it
