New installation V+ dilema!

Hello everyone!

Finally had my V+ installed today but have one problem (well two to be honest)

1. The installer told me he had the boxes but no remotes! So he gave a samsung type and said a v+ would come in the post in a few days.
The problem, cant setup to use hdmi as the confirm screen requires you to press the 'text' button on the remote. The samsung unit must have a different code for its text key.
Would anyone know if one of the other samsung remote keys would send the correct code?

2. THE BIG PROBLEM. The V+ has that hdd problem where it doesnt spin down in standby.
I dont want to phone it in as the box I got is a silver tvdrive with the virgin softwre. The online light stays on! I have all the channels working and the on demand works! Recording also works fine via the front panel controls.

So basically its just the continous low whine of the hard drive thats starting to get really annoying but do I risk calling up and maybe getting a black box as a replacement!

I remember reading about this problem before but I cany find the posts now. Was there a solution found?

Any help or advice would be most welcome!

Re: New installation V+ dilema!

Hold in the Stop and Play/Pause buttons on the front panel, and press Reset. Keep Stop and Play/Pause held in until the display says 'boot'.
After a few seconds the display should say 'outpt'. Press the Fast Forward button several times until the display says 'Hdrni', then press OK. Wait for the box to reboot and it'll be in HDMI mode.

It's normal for the disc to remain spinning when in standby. It might spin down occasionally, but it's not easy to predict when. Your best bet it to try to stand the box on something that absorbs the noise (but don't block the air vents).

By the way, the 'online' light means the cable modem is connected. It's nothing to do with the disc.

Re: New installation V+ dilema!

Thanks for the reply spiderplant

Damn, I forgot about the front panel method!
Many thanks for solving that problem, have no idea when my V+ remote will turn up

So the drive really does spin all the time? Has it always worked in this way or is it a side effect of a software update??

Having read so many posts from having trouble with these boxes, I really expected mine not work but to my delight everything works great.

For information, my box is an unbranded tvdrive (ie no telewest logo) and the installer said they just came back into stock just no remotes yet.

Right, now I just need to work out why I'm not getting dd5.1 out of this baby and I'm done.

Many thanks,
Mac

Re: New installation V+ dilema!

Does the HD spin down if the box goes into "resting" mode ? it definitely doesn't in standby.

Re: New installation V+ dilema!

The exact circumstances under which the hard disk spins down are not yet fully understood, but I have definitely known it to happen.
