Quite the most remarkable thing!!!
I called CS this evening to report a fault with my box (oooh errr missus).
The issue is that it (a Samsung) no longer responds to the remote(s) unless they are less than 12" away.
The box has been rebooted and new batteries fitted to both remotes. It still won't respond to the remotes beyond a 12" range (the LEDs do flicker as normal) but it will only operate using the buttons on the box.
Obviously a box fault one would think, but oh no, not our ever resourceful CS ops at VM, no. Strange as it may seem I've just been told by CS that it's not the box that's at fault but my plasma TV!! According to the helpful chap in CS my plasma is singularly responsible for "burning out" my remote controls. Go figure!
I'm amazed that a CS op can determine the IR transmission frequency of my TV without knowing it's make or model number. Hooray! for the new esp gifted cs ops at VM.
I'm also amazed that my plasma has, since being bought, worked perfectly in tandem with my Samsung box yet has now suddenly decided to emit death rays aimed at my remotes - are Mrs Angry and the Angryites being subjected to these plasma IR death rays? They need to know.
Notwithstanding the fact that I'm highly suspicious of the mental faculties of someone who would suggest "Turn off your plasma to see if the remotes work with the box" as a means of resolving the issue has anyone else been told anything quite so "bonkers"?
If a combination of plasma TV and Samsung box can recreate the fallout equivalent of Nagasaki in our living rooms we need to be told. The CS wouldn't elaborate when I asked if there were any chance these death ray plasmas were made by muslim extremists. That speaks volumes.
I'd start an online petition to expose the dangers only I can't be arsed - it's only Mrs Angry.

Re: Quite the most remarkable thing!!!
Your remotes will be being effected by the frequency of the Backlighting on your Television, nothing to worry about and can normally be sorted by changing the brightness of the backlight.

On another note, energy saving/fluorescent lighting can also have the same unpredictable effects

Re: Quite the most remarkable thing!!!
to be honest..
plasma tv's causing problems with infrared remote systems is nothing new :-)
I see at least a couple per week
just slightly altering the position of the STB to reduce the amount of ilumination on the sensor from the plasma is usually enough to cure your problems..
the amount of ambient light in the room will affect it too :-)
if the only source of light in the room is the plasma you are more likely to suffer problems!
hope this helps!

Once again someone thinks it necessary to insult somone on the phone trying to help you ad from what I can see doing a good job. Faults are diagnosed through the process of ellimination.
Plasmas can cause problems with remotes so why wouldnt it make complete sense to ask you to try the remote with the plasma off. That may be it or it may not.
Notwithstanding the fact I doubt the mental faculties of some people on the forum...... Try beinga little more appreciative!

Hello Richard, thanks for popping by.
I'm glad you're impressed by your staff member's attempts at propagating nonsensical myths about plasma IRs "burning out" remotes. You've every right to be insanely proud of their resourcefulness in offering explanations which defy rudimentary physics.

Yes, though in general it's the elimination of factual information - not the traipsing out of some irrelevant nonsense as some sort of scientific fact.

Yes, I'm aware of the fact now - thanks to Zeph (who didn't even have to labour to keep a straight face whilst typing) and his factual information.

Err, is it because I don't think being able to change channels is much use if I can't watch them because I have to have my TV switched off to do so?

Notwithstanding your inability to comprehend satire try being a little more objective in your analysis of what people post - it does help.

Sorry to ask such a silly question but could you not see the channel number change? therefore seeing if it works from the greater distance. or even have it switched on with 101 ,switch off TV change box to 102 & switch back on again Clearly I am of a lower mind set & have missed something !!!?

Re: Quite the most remarkable thing!!!
Have this prob with my Tosh 37WLT66, Have to wait about 10 minutes for the tv to warm (or whatever its doing) before I can change channels. I only figured it was the tv causing the interference by changeing chnnels with it off and watching the ntl numbers changing
