Virgin Media or AOL Cable
I'm thinking about switching to Virgin Media from AOL Cable (2MB, soon 4MB). I want to switch because I want to get the 3 for £30 bundle but I use the internet a lot but not downloading big files. Already got Virgin TV (Select Pack) & Phone (M).
I've seen that lots of people are having problems with Virgin Media Internet but is Virgin Internet better than AOL Cable?

Re: Virgin Media or AOL Cable
Ultimately if you are getting AOL via Cable, then you know whether or not you have a reasonably stable connection or not. It comes via the same wiring, so the only difference is supplier that you speak to.
After that it comes down to the speed of the service and whether you have any big donwloaders near you grabbing some of the contended bandwidth. the realisty is that few continuous downloaders are likely to be on slower AOL.

Re: Virgin Media or AOL Cable
i am currently with Virgin media for broadband, i would not reccomend them at all. The quality of service is garbage. i.e download speeds as low as 15kb/s and very pings, some of which have been over 2000ms. i am on so called 8 meg. this is my 4th isp and the worst for speed.
hope this helps.

Re: Virgin Media or AOL Cable
The Point Topic report shows that more customers are dissatisfied with their broadband service. The most dissatisfied customers were TalkTalk, and SkyBroadband users.

and http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6400639.stm

New entrants, such as TalkTalk and Sky, are the main focus of dissatisfaction.
Nearly 17% of TalkTalk customers and 14% of Sky broadband users were very or fairly dissatisfied with the service on offer. The main complaint is about after-sales support.

8 meg is ADSL technology so you have copper wire syndrome which really is a problem with BT although your isp is VM. If all your ISP's have been ADSL then you now know the cause of your problem a crap phone line

Re: Virgin Media or AOL Cable
i had a reliable service with previous ISP`s but left due to personal reasons.
VM are the slowest i have been with. BT said i should be able to get 7.5 mp/s and higher. My exchange is about 440 metres away. VM are blaming it on the usual stuff, services running usb stuff, interleaving (error correction) viruses, you get the idea, and they expect me to phone their customers services at 25 ppm.
breach of contract me thinks?

Your missing the point though, the reason why zing mentioned ADSL is because you mention an 8Mb service, which Virgin DO NOT provide. They provide 2Mb, 4Mb and 10Mb services.
Now then, what cable modem do you have? And what is your correct service level - 2, 4 or 10Mb?

Re: Virgin Media or AOL Cable
How did you rate your other ISP's for speed? Care for any names? I've no experience of any DSL services to help you further, as have only ever used cable broadband - since 1999.

Re: Virgin Media or AOL Cable
I had BT which was fast and reliable, but increased our payments? Pipex speed was ok, communication was non existent, and Telewest, the speed was good, unreliable, went down a lot and they took extra money from our bank.
sorry it`s not much help, this is just my experience, others will disagree.
