Going to be renting soon, doubtful i'll be able to take ntl

I'm going to be moving house soon, probably renting somewhere in North East London... I've never rented before, but I'm assuming that I'm right in thinking that very few (i.e hardly any!) places would let you install cable? (Will be living in a 2 bedroom flat, which i guess makes it even less likely!)

If that IS the case, and i can't move my NTL line over, what happens with regards to breaking my contract? (My contract started in November last year).

Thanks for any advice!

There is NO reason why you can't have Virgin Media in a rented property.

The only differences are permission from the Landlord and a Wayleave to install the cable.

Both are easily obtained.

You'll have to ask your landlord for permission to install NTL. I've never had any problems getting permission. If you don't get permission you would normally have to pay up the remainder of your contract. I believe Virgin will let you go without paying if you cancel before the end of March and claim you're leaving because of the loss of Sky channels.

You might find the place is already cabled - assuming it's in a cabled area

Ah right, cool. So it's not major hassle/building work for them to install it on... say... a second floor flat? (Assuming it's not already been installed)

Nope - I visit some friends and several in the block of flats have cable installed - they're on the second floor.

The main thing you need to get is permission (I'd say to be safe written) of the landlord for the cabling. It would probably be an asset to have it installed, as it's a selling feature to say it's already cabled.

All i gotta do now, is find a property! lol

(I don't suppose theres an 'easy-to-read' coverage type map is there? (kinda like the ones you get with the mobile phone networks?).

Sweet, thanks! (I think North-East London is adequately covered)

(Although i guess you still get weird 'pockets' where they decided not to cable.. but hey ho!)

It would mainly be new estates/roads built after around the 1985 period.
If you haven't sorted anywhere out yet, it might be an idea to ask prospective landlords - 1) are you cabled for Virgin Media, if not, is there any objection? You can always check the postcode on the Virgin Media site as well

Yeah those questions will definitely be near the top of my list when i come to looking at places.

Going back to ADSL would be 10000000x easier, but after my previous experiences, i never want to touch ADSL with a 100ft pole ever again! (plus i've not had 1 single problem with cable so far!)

Problems with ADSL are that the speeds are always UPTO.. at least with Virgin Media you should get something like the speeds offered. I've had NTL Broadband for somewhile now, and never had any problems.

Good luck with the flat hunting
