Netgear router setup problem

Hi All,

Anyone out there who can help a novice to set up a new router??

I have just received a netgear router from sky, and now have it running on the internet no problem, however, the wireless capability doesn't have the range I need! I have phoned tech support and changed the channels from 6, to 1 and 11 but still the range isn't there. Therefore, I bought a netgear mimo router with rangemax (DG834PN) and am now trying to set this up. Sky say that I cannot do it as they didn't provide it!

During the installation from the CD provided it is asking for the PPPoA details?? That comes to the end of my knowledge!!

Any ideas, can it be done??

I expect it can be done. The PPPoA details will have been given to you when you first signed up for Sky broadband. They are basically the details you need to connect to the Internet, such as username, password, DNS servers, MTU, etc. If you don't have them, you can phone up Sky to ask for them.

I think the router provided by Sky has a custom firmware in it.

unless you have changed it.

Netgear Firmware is open source Linux, thus SKY would be in violation of the GNU public licence if they terminate your contract for Telnet injecting your router. Especially since their own site declares this router. as your own property.

Just tried this on mine and it does not work. Seems newer sky routers have a different firmware with this option blocked. The only way round it is to flash the router then try it again which release's the settings.

Getting on better with mine, has not needed resetting since I dropped the wireless security and simply allowed access via mac address.

If you are looking for extended range youcould simply get a 6db antenna, they are available from £5 on ebay and the web.

Managed to download a copy of the netgear config file so will have a look at that later.

Quite interested on the new antenna tho, possibly save a lot of hassle! Did a quick search on ebay and there seems to be two different types of connections!!

R-TNC and a RPSMA? Any ideas which one for the DG834GT router? Netgear website just stated that it was a 2db antenna as standard, no details on the connection type!
