connecting 2 pc,s on 1 router

hi, i have 2 pc,s and i want to connect them to one internet connection.............

1. do i put my broadband disc on both pc,s with the cereal number???

2. will i need a wireless router?

3. as i just got a new pc shall i just put the broadband cd i had on my other pc onto the new one???


im abit lost as you can see LOL

You shouldn't need the install CD supplied by Virgin Media (ntl:telewest).

I'm assuming that you already have one PC working OK via your cable modem, and you connect using ethernet cable (not USB).

Power off the computer and modem.
Plug the ethernet cable from the modem, into the WAN port of the router. Plug an ethernet cable from a LAN port into computer 1, and a second ethernet cable from a different LAN port into computer 2, power up modem, then router, then PC and you should all be set up.

You do not have to go wireless. Wireless is only of benefit when you don't want bits of ethernet cable trailing round your house, or if you've got a wireless based laptop that you want to be mobile with.

my new pc hasnt got nowt on it......i bought it today so have to reinstall ntl disc onto it???

i havnt bought a router for the other pc yet eitherr............i need to buy one? but b4 i do i wanted to know if i shud go wirless as in no cables???

You only need the Virgin Media (ntl:telewest) broadband disc if you are connecting direct to the modem using USB.

A new PC as supplied by a shop that includes a network card, is ready to be connected to the modem. You don't need extra software.

To connect more than one PC to the modem at the same time you need a router (unless you opt for the sometimes complex Internet Connection Sharing method). You only need one router for your network.

Routers come in two forms:

• wired: Usually allows 4 computers to be connected each having ethernet cables. Some more expensive routers will have 8 connections.
• wired with wireless: Most routers of this type will have provision for up to 4 wired connections, and additional connections by wireless.

As I've said above, wireless is desired if you want to minimise the number of cables running round your house, or if you have a protable computer such as a laptop. Each computer you want to connect wireless needs it's own wireless adaptor (in stead of the standard ethernet based network card). Most modern laptops, and some sophisticated desktop PCs will come with wireless adaptors inside.

Wireless does have a limited range, adequate for most normal houses. Some people find interference can cause some loss of speed / connectivity. It's convenience makes it popular, but it's not for everybody, particularly those who might move large amounts of data between computers on their own network.

Make sure when buying any router that it suits your internet provider. ADSL routers will not work on cable.

The Linksys WRT54G range of routers are highly recommended on this forum. They are cable routers btw

i just bought a netgear super wireless adsl modem router (recomended by sales person) 1 i can get online with it!
2. cant seem to conect my laptop with it
3. keeps asking for password???

grrr wish i never got it now
