Setting up Linksys WRT54GS-UK

I'm posting this thread via my new Linksys WRT54GS-UK Speedbooster Router and matching Linksys WMP54GS-UK Speedbooster PCI card, over my new VM10mg connection!

But I could do with a bit of guidence configuring the router. I'm sorry I realise this has been posted before but for the life of me I cant find it!!

So at the moment its not secure and I'm not sure what connection type to use, i.e. DHCP or STATIC. And if there are any other settings you recommend please let me know. Also do I have to physically activate the SpeedBooster technology or does it just work?

For info, I'll be wanting to set up a network between this pc and my families pc (to share files etc) which is connected directly to the router via ethernet. Also I use Azureus so I believe I'll need to open some ports...

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

Are you able to go to the wrt54gs server menu by typing 192.168.1.1 into your browser. I have a WMP54G card so may be able to help if no techno-bots are out there.

DHCP and secure it with a password on the log in page as well as setting a WEP key

Re: Setting up Linksys WRT54GS-UK

My post from another thread might help.

Quote:
To secure your Linksys make sure you change the following.

In the router settings change:-

1)Under Wireless/Basic Wireless Settings tab change the SSID and disable Wireless SSID Broadcast.

2)Under Wireless/Wireless Security tab change the Security mode, mines set to WPA Personel.

3)Under Wireless/Wireless Security tab change the WPA Shared Key : password.

4)Consider using the Wireless MAC Filter, for example mine just has the modem and Xbox 360 MAC in the list so nothing else is aloud.

5) Change the password you enter to get into the router config page. I think you do that from the Administration tab.

aha! Thats what I was looking for!

Set it to DHCP - I've changed it to WPA Personal and set password - And I've changed the Router Config login. So now its secure.
I changed the SSID from "linksys" so something else but then I couldn't locate the wireless network! How come?

What about the speedbooster? Its showing Speed as 54mbps and Signal as Excellent. Shouldn't it go up to 125mbps?

Re: Setting up Linksys WRT54GS-UK

Is your other wireless device set to WPA? I use WEP but either way both devices need to be using the same standard and you may have to reset the passkey on the wireless device if you have changed the router key.

Yes Paul does. You need to put the new passkey onto the wireless adaptor. You might have to switch SSID broadcast on again to locate it.

Only if your wireless card supports "Turbo mode" - which I doubt it does.

Ok but both my router and pci adapter have speedbooster technology and from what I've read both are required to make it work so I'm just asking is does it work automatically or do I have to turn it on?

Re: Setting up Linksys WRT54GS-UK

There might be a speedbooster button on the front of each device but i'm not sure. I'm sure the manual will say though.

[edit]

Taken from the Manual on page 79. Note it's a PDF and it takes ages to download and open up in your browser.

How do I turn on SpeedBooster on my router?
SpeedBooster is automatically turned on in Mixed and G-Only Mode. There's nothing you need to do to utilize
this feature.
