If you have a second output on your graphics card, it's worth getting another monitor if you can, whether brand new or second hand. I've been using 2 monitors for ages now, & would hate having to go back to just 1.

Or you could try what I do - use 1 of the various dock programs [I use Y'z Dock] & have it set to autohide. I have 45 icons on there [not all are progs, a couple are shortcuts to PDFs, & 1 is to a script that puts my monitors into standby mode after a 10 second delay]. Admittedly some of the icons built into progs can look a bit rough when they get enlarged/magnified on a dock, but you can often find icons other people have made for those progs, or you can make your own [as I have for a few].
I just realised, to clear up any confusion, those shortcuts on my desktop aren't progs [well, a couple are, I just haven't gotten round to deleting them yet as they put them there without asking me during their install process], they're almost all internet shortcuts, with a few .txt, .doc, & .pdf files thrown in for good measure.

I only have my screen res set to 1024x768 on each monitor anyway, 1280x1024 would be too small for me.

Re: [Merged] Show us your Desktop or Wallpaper
I have dual output but not the space to fit a 2nd monitor, if I did, I'd probably get a cheap 15 or 17 inch and wall mount it as a display for media, like TV, DVD, WMP etc. 1280x1024 on a 19 inch is about the same as 1024x768 on a 15 inch, but i suppose on a 17 it could be a bit small.
See what you mean about using docking, but wouldn't that make the icons larger not smaller and anyway I like to manage it without adding much software because it bloats the machine up. I've used this method for about ten years, well, since Win98 introduced the QL bar anyway, and never found any problems with it. There is a logic to the various toolbars, anyway - including one where I can browse the entire contents of the PC.

Damn, it sucks to be short on space, I've been in that situation in the past.

My right 1 is a 19" LCD, my left 1 is a 20" CRT [18" viewable] which I plan to replace for another LCD as soon as I get the chance.

Well, yes...

But only as you roll over the icons. As you move over them they magnify, & as you move along the dock the icons furthest from the cursor get smaller, plus as I said, I have it set to autohide, so unless I move my cursor up to the top of my right-hand screen it's completely invisible anyway.

What's the specs of your machine? Mine's an XP3200 with 2GB RAM [graphics card isn't too relevant, anything made in the last 3 or 4 years should have no trouble with it, & even older 1s should be ok]. I was using it even back when I only had 512MB. It only uses about 40MB I think with all the icons I have on it, & considering that most are custom 1s [128x128, .png, instead of the .ico 1s built into the progs] that's not too bad.

I actually only discovered that trick [browsing the computer from the taskbar toolbar] the other day, but couldn't get it to work in a way I'd want. If I was to use it I'd have nothing except that little triangle you see when a toolbar has more stuff than it's showing, but the smallest I could get it was with it having a couple of drive icons, which eats too much taskbar space for my liking.

Re: [Merged] Show us your Desktop or Wallpaper
I've just squeezed a spare 15in on the desk for the football, so i can watch that and surf at the same time. Thought I had a longer VGA cable than that though. And it is literally squeezed.
Spec: Athlon 64 3700+, Asus K8VSE Deluxe board, Nvidia 7600GS (512 MB), Audigy2 ZS, 1 GB RAM... loads of other stuff. Not especially the spec that's the problem just that I already have 75 processes and I've rebooted (to apply the dual display) and otherwise firefox, email, and WinTv. If it bothered me i'd slim it down but I don't see it as a better solution than this. One using an add on program, or one using what's already there... hmm...
I normally just drag the Computer bar right over to the right hand side, if you set it to show the title then it works.

Are they both LCDs? If not, it might be less of a squeeze if they were. Plus LCDs give you extra mounting options. It's kinda hard to give suggestions, not having seen how things are at the moment.

That'd run it easily [though if you can find room in your budget for an extra 1GB, you'd appreciate the difference - in general I mean].

75? [img]Download Failed (1)[/img] What the hell have you got running? Let me get this straight - you rebooted, & the only things you've started are Firefox, your email prog, & WinTV [& Task Manager to see your running processes] You said that not bloating up the machine was a concern for you, but at this precise moment I have 8 processes less than you running, but way more actual apps running [assuming I haven't misunderstood your comment about how much you started after rebooting], which leads me to think that:
a) you've picked up some spyware &/or other malware from somewhere, or...
b) you have a bunch of unnecessary processes running at startup that were installed by various apps, but do very little [if any] good, & actually bog down/bloat your machine, or...
c) a bit of both.
If you want to sort it out, start a separate thread & I'll help you get it sorted.

Yes they were. I thought I had a longer VGA lead so I could put the 2nd screen in the other corner, though. 19in on the main one, 2nd one is a 15. It's off the desk though now.

I know, but really, it's fine. As I said, the solution I have works fine with no extra programs needed.

It's clean, it's checked daily (well, nightly actually). Most of them are related to anti spyware/virus checker/firewall stuff, as well as things like Windows Desktop Search, WindowBlinds, TopDesk, stuff for audio card, bluetooth, InCD, GetRight, Diskeeper, Everest (to log the temperatures) and the EPG for WinTV. Really, I use them all, so they may as well start up and the PC can cope with it.
Not overly worried by it.

Oh well, at least you know that they would go where you want if you got a longer VGA lead.

I wasn't saying you should get extra RAM for the sake of running an extra prog, just that it would make your existing stuff run a bit more smoothly.

I tried Window Blinds once, it was quite a while ago & my system would have been a bit lower spec than it is now [I think I had an XP1900 & 640MB RAM back then], but I seem to remember it being rather resource hungry & causing probs of some kind.
Even with the stuff you list I would have expected you to have less processes running than me.

Because I liked it how it sits on my desktop, gives me space to dump stuff around it when I need to.
As for recycle bin I clear it via a shortcut on the start menu which links me to recycle bin.

You both might want to reduce the size of that picture, as it's buggered the thread up on this page.

It's just to annoy you
It would have been better posted as an attachment, not in img tags. Not everyone has a large resolution.

My resolution isn't that small, it's 1280x1024, and it sure makes the page load times longer.

I have a widescreen monitor (900 x 1440) and that image was still too big. It has been removed.
