New phone pest.

I am registered with TPS which has cut out most nuisance calls, however I have just had several calls in the past hour or so, it is obviously a taped message with an American accent, blathering on about how I have won £1001 and something about holidays in Bermuda etc. It then asks me to press the number 9 key. I put the phone down but it instantly rings back. As you might expect 1471 reveals a witheld number. Do I need to contact Ntl to put witheld number blocking on or can I do it online.

Re: New phone pest.

Do i really sound american

you used to be able to block with held number just by keying in a number to
the phone. I think you dial 1478

Re: New phone pest.

If the call actually does come from America then ACR (annonymous caller rejection) doesn't work apparently.

Re: New phone pest.

Thanks for the replies, I don't think it is from the USA its just a corny accent. So how do I enable ACR? I can think of one or two other anonymous callers I would like to reject Is as simple as keying 1478 ?

Re: New phone pest.

If anyone gets a call like this asking to press a number on your keypad don't from whati remember this happened to BT customers last year and you press the number then that person is able to make calls from your line remotely. You definity speak to ntl as it is a scam IMO

Re: New phone pest.

Once again thanks to all, I may be getting on a bit but I am not gullible enough to fall for anything like this, it was just a pain but it seems to have stopped for now.

TPS is quite good but for us the odd pest call slips through, usually from China the home of phoney US accents, and how do we know, 1471 gives the identity. TPS I suspect only relates to UK based operations. Not much TPS can do about calls from countries like China.

Re: New phone pest.

We have had ACR on our NTL line for a good few years now and for a long time it was very effective.

During the last 12 months or so, we have been getting an increasing amount of these automated calls. Reminds me of the Simpsons episode where Homer finds an autodialler. 'If you want happiness, send $1 to Happy Dude, 742 Evergreen Terrace'.

As soon as you pick up the call, you can tell what it's going to be - I more or less put the phone down straight away.

I have registered with TPS, but so far can't say that I've noticed any difference.

A lot of these automated calls originate from outside the UK and so TPS has no power over them.

As Russ has already said, because they are foreign calls they are not "caller ID witheld" just "caller ID unavailable" so ACR does not stop them either.

Re: New phone pest.

I have registered with the tps, but apparently it takes up to 28 days to kick in........somehow the companies know this and phone you more in that 28 days.

I have found out that if you buy anything and the shop asks for your home number, then that means that the shop you bought out of can sell your details again, so it starts the whole cycle again.

Yes, the shop can sell your details on... but whoever uses your details must check with TPS before phoning you or be in breach of regulations (unless they are outside the UK). You do not need to re-register with TPS.
