Problem?

Hey all, im using a wrtgsv5.1 with the ntl 200, Say if im on msn on the pc via ethernet, and my brother signs in via wireless it sometimes it disconnects us both, or if im on the laptop and my brother comes on the pc, i get issues on the laptop. Its asif there conflicting. The router is pretty new and has the latest firmware, the laptop is fine ect. The only thing i can think of is that its the ntl modem?

Re: Problem?

should only disconnect you if there is an ip clash, the modem wont be affected by the number of devices connected to the router.

Re: Problem?

I'm with gooner on this one - I'd suspect an IP conflict.

I've noticed XP has this irritating habit of assuming it can have the same IP it had last time on bootup rather than actually waiting to be given it's IP address. This regularly results in either mine or my wifes laptop complaining about IP conflicts on boot up. That said it usually sorts itself out straight after.

Are you using fixed IP or DHCP? What types of downloading are you doing?

As brundles pointed out - this may well be an IP clash..

can you check the IP address of the 2 devices to see if they are the same?

This can be done by pressing start, then Run, and typing cmd

In the new window that comes up type
ipconfig /all

You're looking for something like the following (bold line is what you need to pay attention to)

Code:
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 3:

        Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
        Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Marvell Yukon 88E8053 PCI-E Gigabit
Ethernet Controller
        Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-00-01-00-10-00
        Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.2
        Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
        Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
        DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
                                            4.2.2.3
Just incase you don't know how

Re: Problem?

Just repair the connection... that involves an ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew as well as other things - clearing ARP, DNS etc etc.

Re: Problem?

Just make sure that boths pc's tcp/ip settings in windows are set to automatic if not confident to specify the ip addresses. The router is intelligent enough to give the devices different ip addresses.
