Making a 'live' dvd ???

Hi all, I don't know if this is possible but here goes, I have a a prog on an install disc, it's wanting to install to my hdd, not a problem in itself, what I would like to know is, is it possible to somehow install / burn to a disc so that the program will run from disc and not from the hdd, basically then, I can run it from another pc if and when needed without having to install it all the time.
Thanks for any tips / advice

From another thread : How about using portable apps ? (http://portableapps.com/)

I guess what you are trying to install is something a bit on the big side ? Oracle maybe lol.

In any case a lot of registry hacking will probably be required

Re: Making a 'live' dvd ???

well in theory a good few apps will run from any directory without having to be installed. I install apps and games to different hard drives and do not reinstall them after a format. If you use a usb stick any internal settings will be saved to the app if you use a dvd this will not be the case.

I can't see if my cunning plan would work

Have followed in the footsteps but....................

Here's what I have, it's for my brother in law, it's a prog / disc called auto data, it comes in at 920 mb on dvd as an install, if it's going to be impossible or too much hassle then it's not a biggie, not sure what the full install size, gonna check with the in law..brb

Re: Making a 'live' dvd ???

would run off a memory stick I bet I picked up a kingston 2 gig (will only ever buy branded as ive had generic cheapos die) for 22 quid which I bet it would run off. Or you could buy one of the 4 gig drives and risk it from the other thread on here for 20 quid

another little point if it does rely on registry entries on installed machine you could hunt them out of the registry(easy enough) and export them to file add this to whatever media you are going to use and simply import them into other machines

Thanks for that mate, the install folder comes in at 905 mb, gonna try and install to a usb 2 gig hdd.

I'll let ya all know

---------- Post added at 12:29 ---------- Previous post was at 11:59 ----------

Well that failed miserably if I click on the prog icon in the install folder I get an error saying ' an attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format'

Any suggestions, as I said before, this is more just a case of 'if possible' it's not a big deal

Reps all round

Have you tried putting the PortableApps "wrapper" around it? Think it's on their site somewhere!

Re: Making a 'live' dvd ???

Beat me to it Autodata will have a look at the wrapper, running short on time atm, off to work shortly

---------- Post added at 12:47 ---------- Previous post was at 12:37 ----------

Ok, another suggestion, again, tell me if it's possible please, I have an XP boot cd, think Hiren's, except that it loads into a Windows XP install running off of the CD, could I use something like Nlite to incorporate autodata into the 'live' xp disc ?? if so, it would then ( in theory ) load into xp from cd / dvd and the in law could then use autodata what do you think ?

Re: Making a 'live' dvd ???

Portability depends on two criteria being met. One that the program doesn't depend on install-time registry settings, if it does you could pull the registry entries and have the entries added at autorun. The second criteria being that data and executable locations are dynamic and can be addressed from removable media. Also you'd need to make sure files aren't being loaded into the system directories (windows/system/system32 etc.) during install.
I've had quite a bit of success getting emulators running using removable media, some like MAME are a breeze but others sometimes needed recompiling or require using the methods I mentioned above.
