Help with 3com cable router, Please help.

Hello.
I have Telewest broadband that has worked perfectly since installation.
I have 3 PC's that I want to connect to the internet.
My telewest service came with a Dsl modem that I have been using.
I went and purchased a 3com OfficeConnect Cable/dsl router (four port switch)
I connected my LAN cable to the LAN cable , and connected my WAN cable from my modem to the WAN port on the router.

I accessed the router via the IP address to configure the set up wizzard to allow my router to communicate with the modem and allow my computers to surf the interweb.
The wizzard asks

Please select the mode that applies to your ISP

PPPoE is required (typically DSL users only)
ISP provides configuration dynamically (via DHCP)
ISP has provided a static IP address
PPTP is required (some DSL users in Europe)
Heart Beat Signal (Bigpond/Telstrra) is required
L2TP (used by some European providers)

I Choose the DHCP option.

Some ISP's (particularly those offering Cable) use the Hostname of the device connected to their service to identify them. If you do not have a hostname, leave this field blank.

I do not have a host name.. or this is something I am unaware of so I live blank as it says its optional

Some Cable providers require your MAC address, Do you want to use the MAC address of your dsl modem ...

I manually enter the mac address off of the modem..

I choose to apply the settings,
I reboot my computers and also the cable router.

I still cannot connect to the internet via any of the computers.

Has anyone had any experience in using 3com products ?

Please do not be afraid to get 'techincal' with me

Thank You

Exe

hi

not sure about 3 com routers, but with my previous Linksys & the Safecom I use now, the default settings of 'DHCP server enable' & 'obtain IP address automatically' worked first time - no need to clone the MAC address.

Not only no need.... If you clone the MAC address off the MODEM, you've now got two devices (modem and router) with the same MAC address on the same network - NOT good!

Now it works,
As JohnHorb says it was a MAC conflict.

All sorted and working.

Thank you
