Is NTL having problems in Manchester?

My speeds for the 4mb package is been up and down for weeks but today it has hit an all time low.

if you get a ping of 320ms to the bbc i'd expect that congestion is the problem, it'd be easier to see a problem if you did a tracert to the bbc then you can see where abouts in ntl's network (or not) the congestion is happening.

I just no longer have a stable connection pings of 400+ last night in counter strike official game. This morning it was slow loading pages so completed speeed test and a ping.

If I was on ADSLmax i could understand my up and down speeds now everything is working faster again. will monitor it but cant balme the family as they are not around daughter at uni and son at his gf's. The weekend my daughter actually asked if I had reduced the speed on my package as it was slow.

Anyway will monitor it and do a tracert next time its slow.

I have exactly the same problem, Florence. I can't recall the last time I had a near 4MB download speed. It's averaging around 2.5, sometimes dropping to sub 1MB in the evening, sometimes rising to near 3MB after midnight.

I really envy those who are getting the full speed from their subscribed NTL service. Is there a secret password or something?

A word of advise maybe, from someone who was until the last few days, also getting chronic speeds from a 4Mb line.

Check your modem……………

Yesterday, I FINALLY succeeded in getting an engineer visit, having twice had booked calls cancelled by NTL, because “It’s an area fault, that we have corrected”

He took 1 look at my nice shinny silver 120 NTL modem, guffawed & admitted there, was without doubt the root of my problems. However, he then went on to admit, that he was powerless to exchange it, if, as it undoubtedly was, working, no matter how slowly. [At approx 2pm it was achieving between 780kb & 1Mbs]

Now, whilst he was no doubt a very good technician, he was useless with the proffered cuppa, and managed, somehow to spill it over said shinny silver modem.

RIP silver dinosaur, welcome nice blue NTL 250 modem. Quick text message sent to officially welcome new member of home network and proper service is once again resumed.

I already have the nice blue 250 modem and India call centre has blamed it more than twice for the loss of service when it was network faults.

I was on the phone for over an hour to India only to be told that the solution to my slow speeds...........is I have a grey Ethernet cable and not a blue one........the mind boggles. I was told that NTL do not supply grey cables, I could not get through to him that when I had my Terayon modem installed they did. Thinking of going back to BT and getting another provider I am paying for 10 Meg and not even getting half of that.

I'm not by a long way saying Modems make all the difference, swapping mine seems to have cured the problem for me.

I totally agree about the Indian call centre. I have on many occasions in the last few weeks hung up on them. I also had the colour of my Ethernet cable questioned, mine is a nice yellow 1. "Please change it back to the blue 1 supplied by NTL and call back when you have done that." I Don't imagine they call it bovine pooh, but........................

We're using both blue and grey... with no problems.. I think it's just a load of 'bovine poo' too....... what next? "ah.. you have X router.. you need Y router!" ... suuuuure.. I wouldn't put anything past those Injun call centres...

We've had no significant speed issues of late, although, our connection here did let us down last night a couple of times - first time in AGES (we're on the 4mb connection and in Manchester)
But we're back on a ridiculously healthy 3.85Mb

I don't know how relevant this is but I have noticed that I have been getting consistent 4Mbps speeds when I am on a 10Mb connection.

I am in Northampton (NN3) and I have been regularly getting very close to 10mbps speeds until now.

It seems very coincidental that the speeds seem to be extremely close to 4Mbps rather than jumping about.
