Dumping NTL for an ISP which is not more interested in profit then quality of service
Hi
Should NTL rollout this pathetic 384k upload on the 10mb I am jumping ship in the new year.
I can barely keep within some BF2142 games when my partner is using her pc at same time I am.
Therefore I am looking for a new ISP, phone and tv provider.
I will dump the lot since I will need a new phone line and tv because I think NTL are putting their profits beyond their care for customer service quality.
I am located in Rochdale.

Business operates on the principle of profits. If they didn't they'd be a charity.

Not been confirmed yet. As to the quest for an ISP with decent, consistant upload speeds...... good luck. No matter what ISP you go with you will need to control the bandwidth in use within your side of the network to be able to maximise your gaming pings. Any traffic going through your ISP connection will seriously hamper the ping times. Look at some of the ADSL providers as that is the only way you will get decent upload speeds better than NTL/ TW but since it is ADSL you will need to be sure you can get a decent speed in the first place and you will need to be sure of the contention ratio in your area.
You could try Be but you need to figure in line rental, another provider for TV etc.

Providing no one the house is using p2p aat the same time i usually get a ping between 50 and 200 on wow.
(and for some reason my desktop sits at around 120ms while my macbook will get around 83 ms, i guess something to do with their wi-fi cards?!?)
and most often i can host an 8 player game of GOW without problems
I have 6.5mbit down and 448kps up Adsl.
Mind you not tryed bf2142 yet if its anything like my bros BF2 was, its probably a lot more sensistive to network traffic than other games seem to be.
EA seem to be good at making inefficent netcode (c&c generals netcode springs to mind, that game lags and drops connections with sync error all the time, even on a 100mbit wired lan!)

What he said!
You need to find yourself a router that supports decent QoS functionality. Some support by MAC address, some by IP address, others still can identify specific traffic and give that priority.
If your missus is surfing the web she won't notice if the router drops a request to make way for BF2142. You on the other hand do notice it when your ISP drops the request because your missus has used the bandwidth in your timeslice.
Just to throw a nasty word in - it's basically traffic shaping for your house

The 384K upload was a typing mistake, its now been corrected back to 512K

Good luck in your quest! Personally I'll never touch ADSL again. EVER.
If I can offer you one piece of adivce, do not go with Pipex whatever you do.

Despite the problems i've had with Bulldog, they DO have a good upload speed (1mb)
But, I wonder if that'll change now that Pipex has taken it over (ughhhhh)
