NTL 10mb

Why is the 10mb NTL broadband service very slow when ever I try to download anything. I seem to only get 50k to 100k a second. I hardly call that broadband. Also I am not talking about p2p but valid download sites such as microsoft and softpedia. When I first got the 10 mb service I was always getting over 500k a sec downloads. Why is my broadband getting slower.

p.s. I have even reformated my machine !!!!!!!!!!

Re: NTL 10mb

What are you downloading and from where? Your download speed will rely on the server at the other end being able to put the file out as quickly as you can take it. Also what is your set up ? Stand alone cable modem or STB, what operating system are you running, are you on ethernet or USB, any firewall software running? Any router or hubs in the mix?

Re: NTL 10mb

Have you a link to the download you are trying? Also can you try the speed test in the blue bar towards the top of the page? (While not downloading anything else).
I take it you have checked for virus/ malware etc

How often do you scan for viruses etc? Also have you tried rebooting the SACM and what model SACM have you got?

Re: NTL 10mb

Just Norton AV? Not the full internet security suite? Can you stop the AV from loading at start up and then reboot? Sometimes Nortons can be a pain in the hole.

Re: NTL 10mb

Can you try disabling the suite from starting up (may be in its options) and then reboot. If not we won't know if it's nortons.

Also, can you browse to:
192.168.100.1
and use the user name
root
and password
root
you should see a operation configuration screen link (or similar) which shows you your setup for the modem.
DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING IN THESE SCREENS AS IT CAN AND WILL MESS UP THE MODEM AND CAUSE YOU A CALL OUT FEE FROM NTL

Re: NTL 10mb

Well the config is correct for 10Mb so its not that. Can you look in your Nortons options and see if it will disable and not load up at windows start up? Sometimes Norton goes a bit screwy and messes with the connection/ email etc.

Re: NTL 10mb

Just did that and posted the results 1.6 mb. From reading the the forums it looks like a constant problem with NTL at this time of night. Bit worrying for a home service, when this is the time of the day that most people are at home.

---------- Post added at 21:36 ---------- Previous post was at 21:34 ----------

I might aswell downgrade to the 2mb service. Strange how they are testing the 20mb service and still cannot get the 10mb right yet.

Re: NTL 10mb

Did you try downloading before you installed nortons on your clean install? Also why are you running the Windows firewall as well as Norton?
