Best place to buy RJ45?

My every lovely Girl Friend has converted an old pantry area in our house into an office for me as and early Christmas Prezzy - need to run some RJ45 from the living room to the new 'Office' to connect the PC to.

Wheres the best place online to order?

Cheers.

Re: Best place to buy RJ45?

What length of cable is required and does it need to be ready terminated? Wireless router might be a better option depending on layout but physical cable is more foolproof lol

Re: Best place to buy RJ45?

Probably going to be expensive what with delivery costs, for such a small quantity. You might be better off with a quick trip to your local high street store for a long ethernet cable.

Online I've used Screwfix in the past. Other alternatives might include Maplins.

Re: Best place to buy RJ45?

if your connecting pc to pc then you will need crossover cable, if your going through a router then just standard straight cable will do.

Try aria http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductsList.asp?Name=rj45

Re: Best place to buy RJ45?

Ebuyer do very cheap cable. They actually do 15m Cat-6 (which is Cat-5 compatible, upto gigabit speeds), for only a couple of quid. That's like 45' of cable.I have one, its very good. They also do slim cables for going under doors, etc, for about the same price.

cableuniverse for me as well - only 1.99 for postage on small cables and very good prices (eg <£1 for USB cables and standard RJ45). IIRC you can get a 10m RJ45 for under £5.

Re: Best place to buy RJ45?

Sorry to be pedantic but the cable is called CAT5, CAT5e, CAT6, UTP, STP or whatever you choose to use, it's the connectors that are called RJ45 (which stands for "registered jack")

Re: Best place to buy RJ45?

The most common type of Ethernet cable is Cat5e UTP. STP is slightly more expensive and probably won't be of use to you unless you're running it through your loft or something. As Zeph correctly stated above, RJ45 is the name of the jack on the end of these cables, the case is similar with twisted pair telephone cables; they use RJ11 jacks.

For your situation, you'd probably be better off going to a local electronics shop to just buy a length of Cat5e or Cat6 cable, some places will just have huge reels of it and they'll cut you whatever length, stick the connectors on the end and charge you peanuts, depending on the length.

Re: Best place to buy RJ45?

Don't forget - if you buy cable and RJ45 separate - you are going to need a crimp tool.
