Bad Route To US?

Hi all,
Wonderful forum you have here.

Now down to my problem..

i currently have problems connecting to any sites out of the UK...they load very slow usually (with the odd one loading fast)

and if i try to send a file to anyone in the US i struggle to reach 20kb/s upload.

I struggle to reach any good download speeds from american sites as well (hell, even microsoft is usually slow averaging 100-200kb/s)

But someone in the UK i can do 50-60kb/s easy.

I know US is quite far away but i used to be able to send to them at 50kb/s without a problem.

it's that bad at times that even msn messages dont go through (your message cannot be delivered)

people on comcast seem to be the worst, i get a 100+ms response time from them and if i do a traceroute it seems to be ntl at fault??

hope someone can help shed light on this issue.

a 100ms ping to the US is about normal, you'd see 30ms or so inside ntl then a spike to 90ms+ when it goes to the US

Hmm it is?

im sure it used to be alot better than that...guess that explains the slow file sends then...and slow downloads from US sites...but yea, they used to be fast

Re: Bad Route To US?

a 100ms or so won't make speeds that slow, slowest it can be in normal conditions i've seen is around 2mbit, microsoft (and other large companies) will use akamai for hosting who have servers all over the globe so you should be seeing maximum speed when downloading off microsoft's site, you could post a traceroute to see if the pings are normal etc.

if you get pings over 500ms or so then speeds start to suffer badly, hitting 1s and you'll be barely be above dialup

I've also noticed this with DCC sends on the odd occasion that I've used irc lately. Throughput will rarely exceed 18KB/sec to the US. Shaping upstream traffic to L3/CWC perhaps?
