Finding a deleted file

Hey everyone,

My girlfriend deleted a file back in july and she has been asked to send a copy of this file to someone in uni. I think it is a letter of some kind.

apart from checking the recycled bin, and probably checking the recent/temp folders for a temp backup copym is there any programs (free) that can be used to search for the file, and hopefully its not written over, retrieve the said file?

I remember, on an old comp, i had a norton suite and that helped find totally deleted files.

Re: Finding a deleted file

There are various progs that will do it, as for free of course the other problem you have is time, given that it was deleted way back then, there is the chance that it is unrecoverable............... to be continued ... good luck.

EDIT, must type faster than the bot and ninja fingers

Re: Finding a deleted file

Yeah, unless the PC has been virtually unused since July, I think this is a lost cause.

The OP did not say if they had backups - or if they had checked them or whatever...

They might have the file in an old email or something??

Re: Finding a deleted file

You could try windows system restore to an earlier date It might work for u.

Failing that theres a plethora of disk recovery suites some quite pricey with no real guarantee of recovery : It is also best NOT to use the pc on which the files were deleted.... The more you use the less chance of data recoverery.

Any try windows sys recovery first

My girlfriend deleted a file back in july

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Didnt see that ! sys restore wont work as it only goes back 3 months.

Data recovery is gonna be very slim best save you time and give her the bad news I'm afraid

Re: Finding a deleted file

Sorry People, been out all day.

I also thank you all.

I am not a total noob (newbie, i hate leet speak).

sorry but she never had any back ups.

but she was very lucky, she went to the ucas website, and they had a copy of what she deleted (thinking she would never need it again). so she copied the file from ucas.

I thought i would have to have worked on her computer to recover this file for at least a week the way she was talking.

but alas I dont.

Again thanks.

pips to you all.

Re: Finding a deleted file

Oh - so hang on then - it wasn't real data that was inputted by her - it was just something she had downloaded and then subsequently deleted?
