MAC Codes

I had so much trouble with my ISP (V21 formerly Fast4, now Biscit) that I decided to cancel my direct debits in October. I also sent a letter confirming this to them by recorded delivery. My phone bill shows I made over 40 calls to them but never got through to speak to anyone (their calls are automated). No one has phoned me back. I have also sent 4 emails to various departments. I still have internet access (sometimes), but I don't know how long before they twig I am not paying. I wan't to switch to another ISP, how do I get my MAC code when they are not responding. If I instructed a different ISP would they be able to get it and have it removed? I just don't know what to do for the best. I don't want to be without the internet. Any advice please?

Try the Biscuit forum over at adslguide, there are people who have had similar experiences there.

I hope you managed to get away Tinky, there seems to be a right fiasco going on between V21, Biscit and Netservices. If I was a punter, I'd be licking windows by now.

Many thanks pedantic for bringing this to my attention. I am hoping that the bulk cease order for v21 (Biscit) customers, coming into effect as from tomorrow, means I will be able to choose a different ISP without the need of a MAC code, or have I got that wrong?

As I read it, yes that's correct. But to be sure that is the case, there is a link to another story in that article, pointing to the BT checker. There you can see if there is, indeed, a cease order on your line. In that case, you will need to do a re-provide on your line, so you will unfortunately have down time for possibly 10 days or so, depending on who you choose as your next ISP.

Beginning to panic now tried the BT checker, no problem according to it (still working in other words). So now I am on the search for another ISP pronto!

Update:- Phoned BT Wholesale who said there was still an NOU on my line, and until such times that it is removed i.e when the cease order has been actioned, there is no point in instructing a new ISP. I asked how I was meant to do this when I had no internet, but they gave no satisfactory answer.

I've just had a wander over to the Biscit forum at adslguide, I'm presuming that's you that posted a similar thread over there ? (Presuming you are the greek goddess

) the last post is sound advice. Best to try and get hold of a dial up modem, and a suitable dial up ISP, in case you get cut off. In the mean time, try and decide on a new Broadband ISP before you get cut off. Take down phone numbers etc, in case you can't get online, but try not to be too hasty in a decision.

Either way, it's pretty shambolic, how all this has been handled by all parties concerned. I sympathise with you.

I don't NEED the internet really, but i think i'd feel suicidal if i didn't have it, and i wouldn't be satisfied using someone elses, that'd be like wearing someone else's pants

pedantic you are correct in your presumptions on all counts. I have been on to Tiscali also and they say until the cease order is actioned they can't provide BB. I don't want to do dial up because it costs almost as much as BB. I have decided just to wait it out, then I will be able to select an ISP of my choosing.

Yeh Pia I don't NEED the internet either, but I do enjoy the banter on this forum and I will sorely miss it I am sure. It is pants that I won't have BB for several weeks.
